Is she very poorly?

Postby Lady of Mystery » Apr 23rd, '08, 09:36

I think that my little car isn't too well, aside for the exhaust pipe which I know needs looking at. This moring on the drive into work, I noticed my car making a scarey knocking noise when going around corners, it sounded like it was comming from the front left wheel? All the bolts seem tight so any ideaswhat it could be? Is my wheel about to fall off, is it going to be expensive. I've got her booked into the garage but they can't fit me in until next week.

I'm no mechanic but it sounds like it could be anything. Have you changed the tyre recently? My friend managed to change her own tyre once and was quite proud of herself until the thing damn near came off when she was driving down the A1. Luckily, she was not hurt and neither was anyone else. Bit shaken up, though.

My own car is in for repair at the moment. Bloody thing kept stalling on me and just didn't feel or sound right when I was driving it. Hope it doesn't prove too expensive to remedy.

I use a broomstick. Or an arabian carpet. Not overly reliable but great fun.

I would second that, and also if you have power stearing check the level of the fluid, if this goes low it can make some nasty sounds when turning your wheel, but its probably your bush, they will probably want to do the pair.

Sounds like the CV boots. Is it an old vauxhall?

No I've not changed the tyre recently.

Marky, it's a Nissan Micra. I spoke to Dave on the phone a few minutes ago and he said CV boots too, he assured me that the wheel wont fall off and it should be ok until I get it to the arage.

It sounds like the wheel bearing is on the way out. It's not too expensive. I had one go on an old VW Polo once.

I'm not too bad with cars, i've managed to rebuild my own so I thought I'd chip in. To me it sounds like a wheel bearing about to go. SHouldnt be too expensive :D

Make sure it's done properly though I have heard of some back street garages just packing knackered bearings with grease!!! :o

It stops the knocking for a small while but is definately not good!!!!

Just as an update:

I was just speaking to my local spares supplier, he said a new wheel bearing for a micra would be about £45, add in fitting and it shouldnt be too much :D

Doesn't sound like a wheel bearing. The noise builds up gradually when they are due, and if it's a knocking now it's probably been making some kind of racket for a while.

If iit happens just when cornering, and with little or no history, then I reckon it's the CV boots.

So there.
