Which is the best Torn and Restored Card Effect?

Postby Jammyx » May 5th, '08, 15:12

Hey people.
Iv been checking out several Torn and restored effects including Torn and TnR and was wondering in peoples own opinion What is the best torn and restored effect? They all have their own ins and outs and was wondering what was peoples favorites. I'm taking into account the look of it, the method and the price.

Thanks :D

I like the moethod used in Torn and Peter Harrison's Connected is also worth a viewing but to be honest, I never use a T&R routine as I find them far too fidley for real world performances.

I own connected and although the trick is a strong effect, it requires a pre cursory trick to set it up and can easily get caught out...Peter Harrison does use these forums so it may be wise to contact him for further routine advice.

The majority of stand-alone TnR effects you can buy are totally unsuitable for real world performing. So it depends what you want to do! If you want something that will take 2 hours to make, require mastery at card splitting and a pot of rubber cement, only to use the card up in one minute practicing in your room then almost any of them will do. Having said that, people speak quite highly of "Torn" by Daniel Garcia although I don't have it so can't comment.

However, there are many "classic" versions that can be performed with minimal set-up or even impromptu. They tend to be in books or on DVDs.

I remember the one on Michael Ammar's series being OK, but I personally would recommend the one on Harry Robson's "Magic Under Fire". It uses only two cards, no gaffs, not even a force, is totally impromptu and very workable in the real world.

TnR by Mathieu Bich is a torn, restored transposition. To me it's like doing the old watch gag but then handing them a different watch at the end of it.
Torn gets my vote any day. When I am done with the effect and the spectator is searching for an explantion, I then give them the card they just saw restored, still with their signature on it, the one they had in their hands at the start. They can take it home, and everytime they see it, they can remember the moment again.

Thanks think I'm starting to make my decision and go for Torn. [Edit] No I'm not. I showed my dad all of them and he worked out Torn the first time he saw it (Daniel Garcia performing it),wasn't really impressed by TnR but loved Torched and restored so iv got to say that is the winner. :D [Edit again] No I'm not, can't get a lighter, Now i have to make my mind up all over again. :(

If you want an impromptu T&R effect, which only uses one card, then reinCARDnation by Kris Nevling is worth looking at!

Any logical person can "work it out", don't worry yourself with this minute detail. You aren't setting out to fool anyone, merely entertain them.
And any Torn and Restored anything performed well is entertaining.

Chris Nevlin, and it really is a great version. So is his linking cards. When you see the method for linking card however you think its never going to work.

TORN is the best I have come across, though I here good things about Kris Nevlings T&R.

Connected is good if you can hold an audience for a complete routine.

Personally I think if you want commercial t&r plots that are absolutely useable in real world performances, then Sankey has some nice ones on his DVDs, the one I am thinking of is on one of his ' best of Sankey ' DVDS.. where a card is torn, then a plaster appears over the tear, and when it is removed the card is completely normal.. oh and the card is signed!!

Does anyone else think that Torn is a little too angle-sensitive?

No I have found it to be angle friendly in many respects..

a view from straight on and a little to your right is perfect as your right hand provides cover.

I've never been caught on it..

The BEST torn'n'restored effect is a well kept secret - I made the mistake of showing it to some magicians once and now all the ones I know do it all the time. Never again.
