My First Proper Regular Gig!

Postby RobMagic » May 17th, '08, 20:19

Ok I know this has been done to death before by others but never by me so I thought I'd post a new topic.

I was in a local to my folks tonight where I've done magic before. I went with the sole intention of asking for regular work where I'd do the work for free but they provide drinks for me and the good lady etc.

Anyway the landlord went for it so I now have my "regular" practice gig where I can work and practice my magic. to be honest I feel I'm at the stage where I want to be performing for the public, I think I'll be fine with an audience where they are drinking.

What I don't have is this, The landlord is over the moon for me to provide my own material like posters etc

So what do I need to put on these posters? How do I advertise my self to the max!? I'll be working a quiet ish saturday night with regulars and we've gone with once a month at my request.

I'm quite exctited actually and looking forward to it. I was a little bold in asking the landlord but he bit into it so I'm going to grab this oportunity and learn from it.

Can you guys please tell me what I should put on a poster? If this goes well and he increases his business as a result I want it to work me towards paid work so I'd really like it to work out

Cheers!!!

Mate - nice one!

I can't wait to see your magic get even better with this kind of regular practice!

I haven't any experience or expertise to offer, but how I'd approach it is this: rather than posters everywhere, perhaps put one poster up near the door. Then perhaps get a business card or even postcard printed, stylish and fairly minimalist, saying who you are, that you'll be regular on such-and-such night at that local (definitely get their name on it, it'll make the "vocal contract" more secure and make you seem more established and professional) and depending on whether you really want to throw yourself in it, that you are contactable for perhaps fundays, functions, that kind of thing? Only if you feel ready of course.

The other thing is, if it's a smaller local type setting, you may find groups converging to watch, so you might want to think about a few tricks that can play to a slightly bigger group? Our own MagicBill has shown how even spongeballs can play to a roomful.

Congratulations Agecroft!!!

Firstly, I'd never put any contact information on a poster in a pub or anywhere else for that matter. Makes you a far too easy target for jokers wanting to make prank calls, leave that kind of info for business cards.

You're best off just putting, who you are and where and when you'll be performing.

The design obviously depends alot on your personality and performance style but one thing I've found works really well is to have some kind of revelation on the poster.

Best of luck with it all :D
