hi guys,

im joel, 26 from bucks. ive been doing card and a little close up magic quite a while now...

well ok... i started around 10 years old or maybe before, and would have described myself as an advanced amateur. thing is i stopped for a number of years (work and family commitments... note: babies eat playing cards!!!) so am pretty much a beginner once more:(.

my girlfriend has rekindled my interest, and wants to dip her toe in too:), so ive trundled off to davenports again after many years, picked up a few decks, bought her a copy of "royal road...", dusted off my old box of tricks and cards and dug out the long forgotten library. and hey presto (excuse the pun) here i am completely by accident (googling something else:S). had a look round and liked what i saw (particularly the 'sin bin' haha) so signed up immediately:)

anyway, other than that poor intro, im a father of 2, powerlifter, suffering from a panic disorder, hoping to FINALLY go to med school, ex-pro drummer (my fall-back!) and a bit of a nerd who collects prussian, imperial german and third reich iron crosses and bores people to death with...

oh sorry, you can wake up now guys im done

Hey, welcome and have a good time here. :D

Barton: Have you read the Bible, Pete?
Pete: Holy Bible?
Barton: Yeah.
Pete: Yeah, I think so. Anyway, I've heard about it.

thank you all for your welcomes, much appreciated :)

ive found the site great so far and already learned a few things reading others posts.

i had a good look through the review sections and was surprised to see noone has reviewed 'life, death & other cards tricks' (one of my favourite books) yet, so i think i may dip my hand into this very soon :D

thought id update my poor intro to tell you more about my magical interests...

well as i stated before my focus is on cards and close-up.

this started in childhood and has been re-awakened by my partner (hopefully soon to be wife :D). my ex was very anti-magic so i ended up 'laying up the cards' so to speak for years.

anyway...

within this close-up framework, i have a few select types which i tend to gear towards:

deck tricks requiring sleights (im old fashioned sometimes :P )

very visual card/ close up effects (i love the new extremely visual stuff to change things up. particularly animated etc. these are the times when i use packets too sometimes. just seems odd otherwise for some one to be walking round with a poker hand in a wallet so if i cant combine these with a deck they go...). i have a decent little collection, but never over-do these.

my favourite effects of all are torn and restored card types :D

i also love 'spooky' type tricks. ok they dont scare but i love using a patter and creating an air of mystery. think eerie victorian tales and black ghost bikes, inexplicable goings on and sarah jessica parkers fashion sense (kidding, sort of joking but not really...)

on another note aside from visual card and CU stuff where theres no other choice, i shy away from most gimmicks (i never use a raven, TT, egg bags, cases/frames etc.) preferring sleights, and effects where things are more "open". the only other exception being the (very) odd bit of IT (but not for the obvious uses), and RF on a few certain occaisions).

i also reaaaaaally love a routine i came up with based ooonnn... 'who wants to be a millionaire'. very visual and colourful with quite a few surprises. ill be redoing this again as its so much fun and hope to share it soon :)

thanks for your time, and again for letting me join in the fun :)
