Curvature - A Double Selection Card Trick

Postby Palfince » Jul 6th, '08, 12:55

In the past I have posted rather a lot of tricks that I have made up, most of which I now think are kind of tacky and quite bad. This one however is a favourite of mine and I recently performed it to some people at school who thought it was pretty amazing.

I just want to know what everyone thinks of the trick and the performance and whether or not it is a better trick than those I have posted in the past. I have recorded a video of it which you can watch from the link below.

Description
two cards are chosen, one face up and one face down
they are both lost in the deck
it is explained that the face up card is easier to find as it's face up and the others are face down
a fan is passed over the deck and the card is produced
the face down card is then found as it sticks out of the crowd, or in this case, the deck

Thanks,

Tom aka Palfince

Not bad. The effect may be stronger with patter, but I'm not sure about certain aspects of it.

From a technical standpoint -

I'm not sure if your ECC was intentionally done that way, but this needs work. Is there any particular reason to clearly show that you are sliding the queen forward on top of the deck? For me, that kills the illusion you try to sell immediately afterwards.

Your get ready for the appearance of the queen flashed a tiny bit - but other than that, it's a very smooth move. The appearance of the queen was very well done.

My biggest problem with the effect, is I don't see a tangible link between the two cards. Your explanation of the patter somewhat spells it out for me, but it just doesn't seem to fit. As well, the revelation of the 2 is almost entirely outdone by the reappearance of the queen. Given the way you are presenting it, the 2 should be "big finish", where here it becomes something of an afterthought. It's not as visually impressive as the queen.

Your handling is good - and I think you have a great start here, I just think there needs to be more of a connection between the two cards. I'm not entirely sure what that should mean, but the effect just seems (to me) to need a little something extra to put it over the top.

Nice video!

Thanks for you comments.

I see what you mean about the ECC it does look a bit awkward and I have been practicing it recently (after I put the video up). Although I did mean for the ECC to look as it was it might be better to do it as it is usually done.

As for the patter I usually talk about how much easier it is to find the face up card in the deck as all I have to do is wave a fan over the deck and the card appears. I then say how much harder it is to find the face down card, although it's usually quite easy because it seems to always "stick out of the crowd" or in this case the deck. I usually put the fan back on the deck as they are looking at the face up card so it looks as if the card just appears to stick out of the deck.
