Bending Shadows

Postby lussika » Jul 9th, '08, 07:16

Hello everybody, I have heard that someone can do some sort of magic trick that has described as "bending shadows." Has anyone ever heard of this before? Is it really possible? What are the special effects they used to do this type of fantasy? I think I have heard something wrong, it would be different. But if it is real then how the magician make it possible? What is your opinion?

Hi lussika

I am afraid what you are asking is not going to get answered here. This forum is for magicians or at least budding magicians to talk about magic - we try and stay away from discussing how the effexts are achieved.

While I'll not disclose method I will say that what you've been told it right as well as wrong. Penn & Teller have a routine I believe they call THE ROSE which is original to them but someone has "borrowed" from when it comes to creating the idea of bending a shadow vs. the physical object... this is something I've but heard about in the rumor mill however, I've not seen the actual effect presented.

I will encourage you however, to actually get books on magic, special effects for the theater, etc. and actually study the craft vs. just asking about. You will learn much more and also learn more about respecting this craft and its secrets if you're invested in such a way. Though it's much more accessible now days than it should be, magic still requires a certain amount of sweat equity by its patrons.

lussika, bananafish is right - we don't divulge methods, or even idly guess at them publicly when we don't know for sure. However, if you're looking to see if the effect is marketed or performed by anyone, then you might get an answer.

Personally I've never heard of such an effect. The only thing that jumps to mind is Teller's shadow effect with a rose.

I would be curious if anyone *has* ever heard of such an effect and by whom.

I maybe, and generally am, wrong Craig, but I believe the Penn and Teller routine is called "Shadows" I've only ever seen Teller perform it, and he came up with it as a teenager, so i guess its just a Teller routine, not the duo

Anywhom, to anybody has not seen it, it is truly beautiful.
