Tricks for travellers (no cards please)

Postby fasttimes » Jul 10th, '08, 21:10

I'm going on a 2 month trip to SE Asia. The last time I did this I brought along a "Stealth Pen" and had loads of fun with it.

This is a perfect type of prop to bring because it is small and non-country specific. A pen is a pen no matter where you go. Coins just don't cut it.

Do you have any reccomendations of other small and "generic" tricks that would be good for a person who needs to travel very lightly?

Thanks!

Spongeballs always go down well, wherever you go!

How about the trusty deck of cards? as Eugene Burger said: "52 different symbols, recognized worldwide that fit conveniently into the pocket". What could be better? :D

Cards have "magic trick" written all over them. When stabbing through a $20 bill in Cambodia, the shock value is awesome. Not that I have anything against cards, but I'm just looking for a couple more items for a 1-2 min quickie street routine.

I'm not sure what that's meant to mean. So are you trying to convince them that if you say, stab through a $20 bill, you're doing it by voodoo or something? Anyway, you can perform plenty of mind reading effect with cards using a simple force..... I appreciate that maybe you want to use something different to cards, but I've got to disagree with your first point.

At most my cards have bicycle written on them, some say joker and a few have a guide to poker hands or an advertizement. But non say 'magic trick'.

If somoene pulls out a deck of cards at random and starts showing you something with it, one usually realizes you are being shown a magic trick. If someone pulls out a pen and poises it above a piece of paper, you ask yourself "wtf is this wierdo doing?"

Another thing against cards is sometimes there is a language barrier. Not having to talk is sometimes great.

And after you have done your quick pen through bill effect, they will usually realize they've been shown a trick

Not wanting to labour the point here, but have you never heard of a colour change? or an ambitious card routine? No speak needed there. Even if they think "ah a magic trick", after the first phase of your ACR, or a colour change, you'll have their attention and usually the "wtf" reaction.

I'd definitely keep a Haunted Key on my keyring.

Color Vision..colors are colors where ever you go
Pen Through Bill...any bill
Hot Rod...again, colors are colors, yet again
Silks and TT...a snot rag (honestly, that's how it would appear to the audience) is a snot rag where ever you go
Any type of bill switch
And bring Modern Coin Magic with you, because whether you like coins or not (this is coming from a coin magic hater), you can borrow coins where ever you go.

Have fun on your trip!

plus ring vanishes etc, also consider a paddle, isn't there a wonder paddle out there that has add ons for diferent tricks.

I'm headed to Vietnam, then from there who knows.

I used the Stealth pin in Cambodia while waiting for a boat, and the next thing I knew I had 50 guys around me watching!
