Muscle Pass

Postby maRk tHE mAGicK » Aug 7th, '04, 13:40

I hope this can be my first worthy contribution to the forum....
This is for people who are already practising the muscle pass, and I hope I am not giving away the secret willy nilly.... I know how hard it is, and I never really got any help, but I hope it helps whoever is practising

The effect:- The magician asks the spectator if he has ever seen a coin fall down, speactator is bemused at such a question... he says 'Yes, of course' the magician hold the coin up and drops it into his hand below, 'how about a coin falling up???' without waiting for a reply the magician holds his hand out palm up with the coin on it, and the coin FALLS up into his other hand (palm down) which is waiting above!

A couple of people I spoke to have so much trouble doing this [muscle pass]. If done properly it is a fantastic effect. I use casino chips (if you can get hold of some it is excellent practise) or coins the size of casino chips, half dollar and one dollar coins are good.

It is very frustrating when you cant do it straight away, but as with other tricks.....practice!!!!!!!

Practise as often as you can, slightly sweaty hands may make it easier, sometimes I have to hold the coin tight in my pocket so my hand gets sweaty. When squeezing the coin, get it in the same place evrytime, build up a callus on your hand to make the skin hard.

Your THUMB muscle will hurt when you start practising. But practising it a lot will develop your thumb muscle and make it stronger, within a couple of weeks you should be able to make the coin jump 4-6 inches

For anyone who didnt need or want to know this...I'm sorry!!! :-( but I hope it helps for the people trying to do it

Good Luck[/b]

Useful, yes, but for me, not right now.

Coin magic has escaped me and until I learn the higher state of patience that's involved with learning magic with coins, then that's how it's gonna stay. It's not that I don't like to practise, it's just that coins are SO hard to do and I find it a bit soul destroying to say the least.

As the future arrives, and I grow older and wiser, I'm sure the time will come when I perform coin magic. For now, I'm happy transporting coins from my hand to behind kids' ears... As long as I've got my rubber bands and haunted key, I'm ready for magic.

Don't the mum's just love it when you pull money from behind the grubby ear of their little darling...

I do understand your frustration zack, and it does require patience. but the simple ones are good, its not just the trick its the patter most of the time.

Zack, i dont know if you have it, but scotch and soda will freak people of all ages out, and its self working. I have so many reactions from that gimmick, it is so well crafted that people wouldnt think of it in a million years. people will say you should be on t.v as they think its a sleight of hand or something.

Thanks for the post Mark. I've always been very envious of people who can do a good mussle pass. Used properly it's magic in it's purest form.

I was at a Shoot Ogawa lecture last year (theres a reveiw here somewhere) and his MP has to be seen to be believed.

He wasn't just using as the coin falling up effect either, he was using it to sleeve the coin in the opposite sleeve and his top jacket pocket, making for some truely magical vanishes.

If you ever get a chance to see Shoot Ogawa perform - you just have to go for it...

Hi bananafish

Shoot showed it me personally!!! honestly. He was in England for a magic convention last year and was staying with my magic supplier (Keith Bennett magic)

He was just sitting on a couch in the shop, and I didnt recognise him til after we left really. I knew he must have been good as he said he gave a lecture. I told him how serious I was getting into magic, and showed it to me, as I purchased from the shop too. (i thought it was done with reels)He was just mesmerising!!!! A private show for me and my fiancee, we couldnt close our mouths.

If I ever get a chance to see him perform live, I will definatley be there.

P.S casino chips are lighter and much easier, I can get about 3 feet with them but my hands are also bigger. Its stuns people every time, i just pretend to take off somekind of 'magic' cotton.
Glad you found it useful
Thanks
Mark

edit: ok just read, you were at that lecture, it was southampton i believe?? or portsmouth, somewhere down south anyway?

I have Lethal Tender which I only use very rarely. I can't back it up with many other coin tricks (I know I don't have to, but I like to do at least a couple tricks of the same variety together), so tend to leave it at home.

Cheers for the advice anyway.

leathal tender sucks, not that its not a good trick on its own but that it dos'nt have a logical link to another trick.

scotch and soda can lead on to hopping halfs (now with an exp half version avalable) or china change (which can be ravened with a bit of imagination) or vice versa.
or indead the mussle pass, heres an idea american coin falls up then changes to a chineese coin which also falls up before it is given out for inspection, one false transfer needed for this routine. :P

hmm could be a tough one. would be impressive though.

so you mean.. coin falls up (catch with left hand, false transfer and coin falls up from LEFT hand??) I can only do it with my right :-S

Hopping halves is good too, i do like that.
I dont know name of trick, but basically have four coins from right hand, and they all end up one by one in to left hand, but done with sleights not gimmicks.
Thats always a good one, just have to watch the angles though

sorry none to clear that what what.

ok you show an american coin and have it drop down then fall up and have it passed around for inspection wile getting your china change coin.
do a false transfer and go into american coin hops from hand to hand then from pocket to hand finaly changeing to a chineese coin, reach into pocket and show american coin still in pocket   .
now do coin fall down then up with chineese coin and hand out to finish clean.

ok ok, its hurting, but i do like the idea of that.

and if I'm finding it hard to understand, then the spectators certainly shouldnt figure it out!!!

I'll let you know how I get on with that one (in about 3 years lol)
