Sharpie - Permanent Marker Pen

I was surprized to find no review of these great pens. Available in 13! different colours (Most common ones are: Red, Blue, Green and Black) these permanent markers are the best around.

The pen writes on just about any surface, and useful for coins, cards, writing predictions.. etc.

On Paper the ink drys instantly and wont smudge. The ink on smooth surfaces takes about 5 seconds to dry (glass, glossy paper, etc.)
The pens themselves are quite small (thin) so will fit into pockets easily. The nib is fairly fine and they write about 0.5mm I would say, if used at the very tip. The line width is varied accorinding to the pressure applied whilst writting.

The pens apparently hold enough ink to label: 968 cds! Thats enough to last a long time.

The price of the pens varies, they are about £1.00 to £2.00 but I got mine for £1.20 from the local stationer.

If you are a childrens entertainer (I am too) they are great for drawing on balloons.

(WARNING: Just don't wear a white suit whilst using a black one!)

Have you noticed that the original Sharpies are by Sanford yet PaperMate also do them in the UK and the markings are therefore slightly different. If you're looking for an innocent Sharpie to match a gimmicked one then check the brand/markings carefully!

Surely at the very tip, by definition, the width of the line is infinitessimely small...

Thats an interesting point, I've never noticed that. I notice on the type that I have (no brand given) the "Sharpie" logo has a little (r) by the corner of it so maybe this is the original sharpie? or did papermate buy the rights to sell it? I'm sure someone that knows about copyright will pop up soon..

Costco (I'm not on commission) have muti packs off about 20 (black only) for I think about £12.
They are made by Sanford as most of Costco’s stock is imported from America.

I have to say the price is from memory but they were less than £1 each.

The problem with Costco is you pay an annual membership of £25 for two cards so you have to use it for other things than sharpies and bicycles.

Thanks for that GeoC, we were planning to give costco a visit soon. Ill have a look and consider these. Im not sure I would need so many but Costco are strictly in bulk, nothing not sold in multipacks there! Are they assorted colour or what? Thanks.

The last time I bought them there was only a 20 pack of blacks with a free red which was a twin tip standard at one end and a fine (about 0.5) at the other.

I did see big ones in blue with a chsel tip much like a board marker

As far as using them all I think I only have one left as I keep giving them to other club members or for friends to write on CRDs

Problems ahead folks.

I went to our local Staples last night and I see that now PaperMate have taken over the Sharpie brand, they are changing the appearance considerably. Apart from obviously adding their name and logo, the ones I saw as individuals and in the boxes of 12 are distinctly different from the existing style, specifically the matt grey barrel is now darker and more metallic. In other words, they don't look anything like the 'special' Sharpies which are in regular magical use.

If you find a stock of the old style ones, I suggest you snap them up and I'll be checking with my oppos in the US to see if their Sharpies are changing or if it's just in the UK/Europe. Failing that, we'll have to save all the old dried out Sharpies and refill them or fit new innards!

would someone like to split a pack of sharpies with me, 50/50?

Don't panic Mr.Mainwaring!!! I had an e-mail from someone who is an expert in using these items in a most cunning manner and he's about to release a DVD which shows how to refresh, re-ink etc these little beaties!

NEWS JUST IN!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I went to my local Office world today and found an 8 pack of sharpies, with different colours which includes:
Red
Green
Blue
Black
Purple
Pink
Light blue
Orange

I was absolutely amazed by this, and am getting another pack on saturday!

Very technicolour! Stock up while you can, they're all refillable one way or another even if you have to transplant the complete innards from a new one to your existing Sharpie. Frankenstein had a similar idea, I understand!
