I'm sure I saw a presenter from Blue Peter commentating on the women's gymnastics. It just seemed wrong somehow. It was the same bloke who was at Crufts this year. The guy is either a media whore or he has very eclectic tastes.

BTW I much prefer Crufts to the Olympics. Fly ball is very exciting and the agility is always funny (especially when the inept presenter tries it with his silly mongrel). But enough about the opening ceremony.

And as an aside, did you notice that Russia invaded Georgia at the exact moment the opening ceremony began. What did they think? That we wouldn't notice? Ruskies - never trusted 'em since they popped bullets into the Romanovs.

Blimey!
In handball, little Iceland won Russia, the bronze winners from last Olympics and Gold winners from 2000.
And today little Iceland won Germany, the current gold champions in handball.

WOW!

Handball? Isn't that a foul and possible sending off offence?

And how come Coca Cola are always the main sponsors and have been since the third Olympics in 14BC?

And that chap that does the rowing, he's won a gold in every Olympics since 1640. That takes some doing.

Well, there have been a couple of dopers caught out, but I think to say that it's all spoiled by drug use is very unfair on the vast majority of competitors who compete fairly.

As for sponsorship; if there is any then it's very discrete this time round, in fact, the only time I've spotted a corporate logo of any kind is when I saw that some of the swimmers had put tape over the speedo symbol on their cozzies.

AND. Most of the rowers are different this time round but we are still looking good for some medals.

It's each to their own I suppose; I'm enjoying it, you couldn't care less. Though I do think it's a little out of order to belittle the huge effort that the competitors put in to represent their countries at the biggest sporting event in the world.

Rowing in particular, one of the girls is from my old rowing club (Agecroft) reached the final of the W2- and I know the training those guys have to put in and the sacrifices they have to make

You're always going to get doping and cheating in sports and it's not good but I don't think it's as bad as people seem to think. The attitude towards it is changing in the sports.

Those athletes all put in an amazing amount of effort to get to where they are and for very little money in return. I've got a huge respect for all of them.

Did anyone see the weightlifters arm bend the completely wrong way?!? It was one of the grossest things I've ever seen.

Barton: Have you read the Bible, Pete?
Pete: Holy Bible?
Barton: Yeah.
Pete: Yeah, I think so. Anyway, I've heard about it.

shame that the opening ceremony was pre-recorded, and parts computer generated, like the foot prints.
Also the little girl who was singing, it wasn't her voice. The actual girl who sang wasn't 'pretty' enough so they got a pretty girl to mime it.

Typical.

He lifted it up and once above is head the weight was to much for him. His elbows were facing out, and his arm ended up his arm bending the wrong way completely.

I'm sure his elbow broke. It would be a miracle if it didn't. He was screaming and shaking as he dropped the weight, which by the way hit his back to make it worse, and fell to the ground.

They brought out a stretcher and the Beijing people came out holding signs to cover it up. I watched it in slow motion it was gross. I'm sure if you want to you can find it on youtube.

Yeah. How did that work out for ya? :D

Oh, and there's only one "d" in Canada. Except when you spell it "Bloody Canada".

Only joking. Canada is a lovely place. And we sure spanked the Yanks back in 1780-something! But I love the USA too! New York is my favourite place. And we sure kicked the Germans back in 1945! But I love Germany too! Oh, I'll stop now. It's not funny anymore. If it ever was.
