HELP PLEASE Computer Error with pdf files

Postby Allen Tipton » Sep 5th, '08, 14:52

I need help from any of you Tech Guys. Please
This morning I tried to make a back up copy, in case I messed it up, of a CD ; Jean Hugards Card manipulations. It wouldn't copy
THAT'S NOT the trouble.
Ever since, when trying to open pdf files, I get a grid come up saying

Microsoft Global IME 5.02 for Japanese
Command line Option syntax error
Type Command /? for help.

:? :?

And no pdf files will open.

HELP if you can please. I'm on Windows ME

It sounds like it's some sort of corruption of a language support pack. I don't have any experience of Windows ME, but the first thing I'd suggest is you uninstall your pdf reader (I assume it will be Adobe Reader) and then reinstall it. Then completely restart your computer and see if the situation is any better.

Oh, and make sure you have the relevent disc or exe file to hand to reinstall it before you remove it! If you're running ME I assume you've had the computer for years and years, so this may not be the case.

Yup, it sounds like something's a but fecked. Assuming you've got up-to-date anti-virus protection and it's not something malicious doing it, I'd make sure you download the latest Adobe Acrobat Reader to install.

As I recall, Windows ME was the first edition of Windows that had a roll back feature and you should be able to find this in the control panel.

The first action that I would recommend is to use this feature to roll your PC back to a time just before you did the backup and the software started to play up.

I would say that this should be your very first action unless you have installed software, in which case go through the uninstall before using the roll back feature.

Good luck

Hi Allen,

that's very strange; Microsoft Global Input Method Editors (IMEs) allows computer users to enter complex characters and symbols - now, I am not sure why is it starting (unless the pdf has some kind of form)

As it's been suggested, you can reinstalling "Acrobat reader"; if it still doesn't work, first you need to check if the file is indeed a pdf file. If you open the file in Notepad or any other text editor, you should see a line like

%PDF-1.4

at top; now the version may be different; if that line is not there, then it's not a pdf file (if the line is there, it still doesn't mean it's a valid file though)

Next, open up "Acrobat reader" -> Edit -> Preferences: Disable any Form options you may get.

If still encountering the same problem, and if you have ME disk handy, you can try reinstalling asian text support by:

1. Open Regional and Language Options in Control Panel (click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Regional and Language Options).

2. On the Languages tab, under Supplemental language support, select the Install files for East Asian languages check box.

3. Click OK or Apply. You will prompted to insert the Windows CD-ROM or point to a network location where the files are located.

4. After the files are installed, you must restart your computer.

that should solve the problem.

The current version of Adobe Reader, version 9, won't run on ME. You'll need an earlier version.
