The Gilbert Principle

Postby Magnus » Aug 18th, '08, 12:04

On one of Sal Piacente's DVDs, the "Hitman of Magic" is performing a card feat based on the "Gilbert Principle"... and that card trick knocked me right from the feet.

After having conducted some research, I found out that the Gilbert Principle is around already since the 50's, but at the same time I almost didn't find any references of magicians having used it to include it into their routines.

I don't want to go into detail here (already the explanation of the principle could be seen as exposure), but for all those of you out there who are familiar with the principle:

Are you aware of any card routines that use the Gilbert Principle? Are there any card magic books that are built around that principle (or at least dedicate a chapter on it)?

Why do I have the feeling that this post won't get too many replies...

Cheers,
Magnus

There's a very extensive section on Gilbreath's work (including lots of effects) in the excellent "Card Concepts" by Arthur MacTier.

That's what happens when you don't activate subtitles on DVD... you get the names wrong. Gosh, I was so sure this guy on TV said "Gilbert"... confusing enough, there really was a guy called Gilbert who published a scientific paper on the riffle shuffle back in 1955 (Gilbert, E. (1955): Theory of Shuffling. Technical Memorandum, Bell Laboratories.)

However, your comments were of great help... now I know at least what name I have to look for.

Cheers,
Magnus

Pretty sure Lennart Green touches on the Gilbreath principle in Green Lite.

I'm working my way through Sean Taylor's 'Mindstorms' at the moment, and he mentions Out of This World using the Gilbreath principle. He doesn't give any specific references, but says that Lennart Green, Max Maven, John Kennedy, Gordon Bean and David Williamson have all explored it, so that's a few new names to add to your research list.

principle to acquire Gilbert/Commonwealth Inc

Postby albertjames » Sep 18th, '08, 11:31

The acquisition of Gilbert/Commonwealth, when finalized, will greatly strengthen Parsons' existing power capabilities while better positioning us to capitalize on the increasing worldwide demand for power in such growth areas as the Middle East and Asia,'' said Leonard J. Pieroni, chairman and chief executive officer of The Parsons Corp.

That's a spam bot.

Checkout Peter Duffie's works, and also the Cardiste (available from Peter's site, or Lybrary.com). Peter wrote a series of articles about various principa for Profile magazine many years ago, and there were two on Gilbraith.

Take care, Ian

I second that, excellent material.

I've recently published a HARDCOPY (proper book format) of The Cardiste. Take a peek here: www.paulgordon.net/acatalog

It's a brilliant book...
