The explanation below the picture is completely incorrect for me.

Initially I could only see the picture rotating in a clockwise direction which apprantly means I am right brain functioned, however my nature is by far better described by the traits in the left brain function section.

It is quite fun though getting it to change direction just by willing it to.

Clockwise for me, but I can't make her change direction!! Seems impossible seeing as she is only turning one way..

It is possible, but it takes a lot of patience
I find it easier if you cover up everything but her feet, and try to imagine the leg that is lifted up being behind (or in front of, depending which way she's turning) the other leg when she's facing away from the 'camera'

Me too.

I find I can get her to change direction by focusing on one foot and, for want of a better description, really 'willing' it to happen (I know that sounds ridiculous but it works for me!). The other way I can get her to change direction is by looking away quickly and then re-focusing on the screen.

It is such a weird effect and I'd love to know how it actually works. I did wonder if I was being conned and it was just reversing direction every now and again but I've sat and looked at it with my wife and at one point we could both see the picture spinning in a different direction!

This thing is giving me brain ache, either she is spinning anti-clockwise or she isn't - how can she be doing both?!!!

All these men enjoying finally having some control over a woman's actions.

For those who are baffled, it basically works by the silhouette appearing the same whether she's turning 'away' or 'towards' you. For me, she usually changes direction with every turn, ie. she's always facing forwards. Watch long enough and you'll get it.
It just turns and your brain does the rest, deciding whether she's now turning towards you or away from you. Either way it's exactly the same.

It's fascinating to watch though.

It's easiest to "will" the direction change by focusing on the foot that's on the floor -- or even better, on the shadow, or on the space between the foot and the shadow. Get that foot changing direction and the rest of the body will follow.

They're both related to the classic Ames Trapezoid illusion.

This page has a few cool ones. I'm particularly impressed by the pink/green dots at the top of the page (officially called the Lilac Chaser illusion). Failed dismally at finding the face in the coffee beans, but then I do have problems with faces generally.

I found the man in the coffee eventually. Would've been much easier if I knew what to expect. I think the context makes you believe that an arrangement of beans forms a face but that's not the case. It's just a mans head sticking out.

I had the same experience - poorly-worded instruction I think!

There was a very interesting issue of Scientific American a few months back in which they dealt with perception and detailed the mechanisms behind a hundred-odd such illusions... well worth looking out if you're interested in this sort of thing. Issue 39 I think it was!

Oh... I only see the dancer going clockwise.

Oh, I did find the face in the beans. Eventually. It's just that it took me a LOT longer than the three seconds they suggest.

And I'd actually seen it before, which it what makes it even more pathetic.

Finally found the coffee bean man, he looks like Karl Pilkington!

I've posted this before and I shall post it again because it's the best optical illusion I have ever seen...
