Seeking references for thimbles

Postby Phas3r » Sep 19th, '08, 04:14

One of the first good routine i learned when i was in high school was a thimble routine. Sadly i lost some books a while back and after a long pause in magic i forgot most of the essential sleight in those thimble routines. Hopefully i had took notes from one of the routines i was doing and i will expose the effect here, ill be carefull to keep the secrets.

Does anyone know where i can find good/more references about those little shiny thimbles?

Effect:
An old invisible thimble is presented from a ring box. With a pen the magician hit on the thimble and everyone can hear its metal, the magician can also make some "pop" noise placing his index inside the invisible thimble. The magician then place a small aluminium foil over the invisible thimble and press it untill we can clearly see the form of the thimble appear trough the foil.

When the magician take the thimble from his index and press it between his finger, the thimble have disapeared again.

Other routines were more about the thimble apearing and disapearing from your index, using multiple impossible locations. In example "put pocket", vest collar etc. There was also some more advanced sleight using similar tech as "The ring thing" and some other small things wich i dont really remember.

Thimbles

Postby Allen Tipton » Sep 21st, '08, 13:04

:D There is a book on just Thimbles by Jean Hugard which is still available.
There must be some on the subject in one of lewis Ganson Routined Manipulation series. Alas I now only have the Finale one and they are not in that.

Supreme Magic put out one or two booklets on Thimbles; one was by Ken de Courcy
Try Magic Books By Post who purchased all Supreme stocks of books.

I believe Geoffrey Buckingham put material on one of his videos..now dvds i should think. BUT this is from the Top Of The Tree.

I well remember, as a 15 year old, asking the pianist to accompany my Thimble Routine with the Warsaw Concerto.  (still have the music..cued up too) He could only play the waltz, 'Over The Waves.' I then used this for several years afterwards.

There is a great big thick book of fairly recent vintage all about thimble magic. The author is Joe Mogar. Don't ask me the title since I have no idea.

In the Al Leech legacy there is quite a bit about thimbles.

I have been going nuts a bit lately with thimbles. I have quite an imprompu routine with them.

once again, magicref comes up trumps.
If its not on this list, it's probably not worth having.

In that "Mastered Amazement" book which is referenced on the above site and republished by Martin Breese there is a wonderfully easy vanish of 4 thimbles invented by Al Koran. It is unbelievably deceptive.

Beam, Steve: Digital Effects: The Magic of Joe Mogar. This is an extensive and thorough coverage of thimble manipulation. 228 pages, large format hardbound book. $40

This is a fantastic book and also has some new thinking around what are essentially old effects. Beam's "Explosion" production of five thimbles is just great and Mogar's "Sound Effects" routine is beautifully strange (in short the thimbles are removed from the fingers but the "popping" sound they make is out of synch, it occurs just afterwards - very odd and very funny)
