It can be an Omen or Rosemary's Baby like psychological thriller, or it can just be gory. I don't discriminate.

Thanks!

Severance, starring no lesser man than Andy Nyman.

Dead Set started last night on e4 also starring Andy!
He plays a producer for big brother and a very good part it is too.
he's a total a**hole in it.

not film, instead a 5 part made for tv venture, but it was fantastic!
Quite dark and written by Charlie brooker (brass eye, nathan barley). it wasn't toned down at all for tv audiences...very graphic and continues all this week.
Davina Macall was surprisingly good too.

Briefly, the country is wiped out by zombie infection, and centres on the big brother house(/in)mates having survived...for now.

Well worth a look.

Ooh, so many to choose from...

Some faves:

The Orphanage - probably the scariest ghost movie of the last twenty years. Utterly sublime. And a thoroughly gruelling and heartbreaking experience if you happen to be a parent.

Martin - One of the most original vampire flicks, courtesy of Mr Romero.

The Changeling - classic haunted house story with oodles of creepiness.

The Howling - hugely underrated werewolf fun. Try to forget that the sequels ever happened.

The Haunting - the single most important haunted house movie ever made. I'm talking of course about the Robert Wise original - not the dark stinkhole of a remake.

The Thing - John Carpenter's remake is utter perfection.

The Hitcher - of course I'm talking about the original with Rutger Hauer. This is relentless stuff.

Dawn of the Dead - despite being a dedicated Romero fan, both the original and the remake are worth a watch.

Braindead - called Dead Alive in the states. This is Pete Jackson genius long before he started working with Lord of the Rings budgets. If you want blood and gore, this movie makes all others look timid. It's utterly hilarious too!

28 Days Later - great cheapie.

28 Weeks later - fabulous follow-up. Big budget gore epic.

Candyman - why isn't this a classic? It's probably the most intriguing slasher movie out there!

The Devil's Backbone - fabulous ghost fare from the wonderful Mr Del Toro.

The Descent - great British horror. if you're as claustrophobic as I am you'll love it!

The Prophecy - Christopher Walken plays a psychopathic Archangel Gabriel. 'nuff said.

Near Dark - A few days in the life of your typical redneck vampire family...

Shaun of the Dead - sheer brilliance

Repulsion - Forget Rosemary. This is Polanski's scariest movie!

Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer - nasty nasty nasty ick.

Man Bites Dog - a highly unpleasant viewing experience.

I could go on and on and on... I definitely had a misspent adolescence!

:)

Slightly off topic, but on the subject of Oldboy being shown on Film4 last night, Film 4 are showing, as part of their "films to see before you die", a film by Pedro Almodovar called Hable Con Ella (or "Talk To Her") - honestly, if you aint seen it already, watch it, it's fantastic.

re dead set..

I gave it a bit of time last night, but I've got to be honest and say i didnt like it. There is Nothing wrong with the performances, but the shaky handicam work, and the grey , dark lighting just doesn't cut the mustard with me im afraid.

Shame, becaue i really like watching Andy.

I enjoyed Dead Set, but to quote my wife: "Why can't they just hold the camera still so we can see what's happening?"

Have to agree. I know it's meant to imply panic, fear, uncertainty, and the victims view-point, but at the end of the day it's just annoying. I found myself squinting at the TV and peering forward just to see what was going on.

However I did enjoy it and zombie Davina was a master-stroke.

Re: shaky camerawork. It's everywhere now! Even on Dragon's Den the camera man can't keep still or in focus. Are they all after creativity awards or something? Just get the subject in frame and focus the darned thing and stop acting like your work is an art.

Next thing you know they'll be doing it on the News at Ten. Zoom in! Out of focus! Move left! Focus! Move right! Focus out! Whoa! Extreme camerawork man! No. Just annoying.

I thought Oldboy was a fantastic, fascinating film, but not particularly scary, or even that "sick" - but perhaps it's because I'd had it hyped to pieces as such by a friend.

Also, "The Devil's Backbone" I found to be an excellent film but again, not massively scary, more "spooky".

The Orphanage however... I'm happy to admit that film scared the absolute cr@p out of me! I think that was one of the best films of last year. If you're OK with subtitles (it's in Spanish) and like "supernatural horror", or even if you don't, watch this film (also if you liked Pan's Labyrinth - this film has obvious influences of Del Toro, though I can't pin down what his involvement was exactly).

The Orphanage! See it!
