The Works
OK, perhaps this shouldn't be in the Review section but I'm about to mention 6 books plus some magic sets in passing so I thought I'd post it here to start with!
As most of you will know, I virtually live at our local The Works cut price book shop and have discovered a few gems there over the past few months - superb value books by Nic Einhorn, Ian Adair and so on.
Last week I saw two new ones:
The Ultimate Card Trick Book by Eve Devereaux featuring 70 tricks plus a section on sleights and moves - all for £3.99 instead of the cover price of £14.99. The tricks range from basic to good and are illustrated with line sketches quite well.
Card and Magic Tricks by (surprise surprise) Eve Devereaux and Peter Eldin promising over 30 easy to perform stunts to amaze and confound. Also @ £3.99 which is down from £12.95. This one looks like two separate books in one set of covers and the style is visibly different to each. The card section duplicates many of the items in the book above but there are one or two new ones. The other section looks more like the Nic and Ian books with full colour photos. In any case, all worthwhile as far as I'm concerned and will provide plenty of reading material for those long dark winter nights ahead when there's nothing any good on TV. Which is most nights unless there's some magic on!
Sadly there were only a couple of these in our local branch today but I'm told there are plenty in The Works in Birmingham City Centre so nip down to your nearest Works asap!
Today I also noticed the Christmas stock had arrived and there were several Magic sets, mainly aimed at children and consisting of the usual plasticky props but they might make nice stocking fillers at around £3.99 to £4.99 each.
The big surprise today was that they also have 4 Marvin's Magic books on sale, all down from £2.99 to 99p each. Titles are Amazing Card Tricks, Magic With Everyday Objects, Mind Reading Magic and Money Magic. I haven't had chance to read through any of them yet but at less than a quid each even one good item in each would be more than enough. Again, ideal stocking fillers - and not just for the kiddiewinks either!
Value for money: It doesn't get any better!
C.U.P.S.Rating: Hmmm - I bought them all so I'd have to admit to being a 9.9999999 out of 10 addict!
