The History of Magic BBC2 Saturday

Postby bananafish » Oct 18th, '04, 14:06

BBC2, 8.10pm, Saturday October 16th and the following 5 Saturdays - The History of Magic.

First programme is Mind Magic and covers from the Oracle of Delphi right up to Derren Brown. Looks promising

I thought this program was absolutely fantastic. Some detailed information of the history of Mentalism all the way up to modern day with people like Derren Brown, Marc Paul, Max Mavem, David Berglas, Eugene berger and Luke Jermay talking about various points and demonstrating a few.

I am sure I missed someone in that line up, but it shows the quality of people that had.

Luke jermay's stopping someone ELSES pulse was awesome. The nurses he performed it on looked genuinely bemused. Well done Luke for that.

Next week will also be very worth watching. It's on Levitations.

You mean you didnt get it? I managed to work out what she had in mind just from the responses on the programes. I actualy ended up with the arrow, only because we didnt get a clear view of the symbols she had.
If max had drawn the arrow, it would of been near enough to of been a hit. This is why he had to see the t.v set, before reacting to the result.
He knew he was close, but he didnt know how close.

if you taped it, watch it again, with your eyes shut, and your ears open, and you will see what i mean.

Yep..

Excellent..

I was particularly impressed by Berglas floating table. I remember seeing this as a kid and really believing in it (even had some friends round when i was 10 to try it.. but we failed.. funny that !). Still no idea how he does this (wish I knew or had the brains to figure it out !).

The version shown on Saturday was different to the one shown back in the 1960's and 70's - the 100 Greatest type programmes usually show the original version and, after viewing a couple of times, it can be figured out easily enough. One of the older TM members, Tonykins, had associations with this as his Dad was one of David Berglas' assistants at the time of the original TV perfomances. The new version really is something else though!

Yep..

I remember two things from way back when I was small..

One was the floating table, the other was the floating light bulb..

Being fairly new to the methods of magicians (I only started with cards about 8 months or so ago) I have no idea how these bigger things (well bigger tan cards and rubber bands) are done. I really do have no concepts or "tricks of the trade" knowledge to work with on this. I can figure out most (not all by any means) card stuff but not the bigger illusions. So I guess I will remain stumped until I get a table and some whatever and do it (never gonna happen I think !).

Would be nice to know (it's something I've thought about (but not deeply) for over 20 years !). I know I shouldn't ask how things are done, after all I really do appreciate the work involved in creating these illusions, the skill and practice involved and the fact that having put all this effort in just to say.. "well it's easy.. it's done like this.." is a real unravelling of the mystery (just like the masked magician bloke) and doesn't represent the hours of work by any stretch of the imagination..

Still would be nice to know though !

Oh well.. ignorance is bliss I guess.

Cheers

Appears my post picked up "guest" as the author, supposed I had to log in first.

Never mind, glad to find a new resource.

Thanks for that Bananafish,

Being a novice dabbling with magic, gone to a couple of conventions and thought I'd take this more serious an join a club, get constructive critism and help and the like.

Fine I was told, the fee is....... when can you audition.

Audition in from of magicians, hold on a minute, I'll look such a fool. So I decided to practice, practice and then practice a little more. So thats where I am and trawling the net to add originality to my 10-15 mins when I found you guys.

Looks a good forum so far.

Phil - re the magic club audition - don't worry too much about originality, mostly they are looking for just a commitment to magic. I'm sure you will be fine.

Just out of interest which club are you looking to join?

Hi Phil - welcome to TM!

There are plenty of folks here who are members of various clubs around the globe and I'm sure they'll all give you the same basic message - don't worry! They won't be expecting Mr.SuperMagician, just someone who has a genuine interest in magic and who has put in the proper effort to learn practise and present tricks and routines as well as they can. Magic is supposed to be entertaining and fun - don't let anyone tell you otherwise!
