Guns & Sideshow

Postby Ian The Magic-Ian » Nov 12th, '08, 20:43

I'm in the process of developing a magic act and I thought a cool routine would be a gun show. (My massive muscles)

Kidding...

Does anyone know any "gun" related magic effects. Not bullet catch (although I am using a version) or russian roulette. I don't know if there are many but any help would be appreciated. I know there's the shooting the card but I don't like that one and my google and magic shop searches didn't turn up very much. I don't want anyone to spend their time searching for it as it will only benefit myself . But if anyone is familiar with any effects, it shorten my searching time.

EDIT: Why not just weapons altogether. Knives, Guns, etc. (I couldn't think of anything else but if, again, you know anything off the top of your head that would be great. I'd get deadzone pro but I'm on a smallish budget. (Not incrediblly small but small enough that I can't justify $1600 or 800 pounds on one trick. (right now))

ANOTHER EDIT: Or sideshow effects, I like those also. Maybe this is getting to inclusive but I like to pick and choose. Anyways....

Thanks a bunch (in advanced),

Ian

I have seen - would have to look it up - a "mock" version of the bullet catch...it was a spitball fired from a straw catch...would work if you are a comedy/magic performer.

I believe that's andrew maynes? I could be wrong though.... My mock version of the bullet catch I found in an old M.U.M. or Genii magazine (1989ish) so I have that sorted. But thanks for the idea.

In my notebook, I had an idea for an effect which involved shooting a card and the card wouldn't be shot, but be found somewhere gun related.
I had absolutely no method, no way of getting a gun, but it would be fun to mess around with.

I had a gunshot card idea which involved the chosen card being returned to the deck, the deck being shot at and the card being found with a bullet hole in the deck. Probably not what you are after but happy to share if you can use.

That's one of the ones that I mentioned in my initial post. Thanks for the ideas. (so far)

Why not shoot the Ace of Hearts in its guts and have it bleed...

I'm sure the old snap change, or shapeshifter with a suitably adapted dupe would work well...

What about sideshow effects. Carnival or fair booths.

there is an old one where you let a spectator choose a card and note it. then you try to find it and fail then you just throw the whole deck up and thrust a sword in the cards and after they fall down ppl see there is one card pierced on the sword and it is the selected card.

with guns there is one when you shoot a gun at a row of candles and they all light up. or where you shoot a ring from a gun and it appears somewhere else or something like that

best regards

I do not know if your budget could accommodate this but try Bulletproof by Collectors workshop, its very high quality and will last a very long time with care.

Hope this helps.

No Chris, that's to much. I did have an idea though but does anyone know the name of those drawing pads that produce stuff? Like the bowling ball one but for smaller objects. (and cheaper)I fell like scrooge. :P

Why not do the original version of 'The Dead Zone'?

The original version? How much is it?

Anyone know the name to the pad also?

(so many questions I know)

What about a gun-less bullet catch, such as in this video. I'm tempted to get it myself after I can afford luxury items like food again...

Has Google broken?

It can be found on Andy's DVD 'Get Nyman', and I think it's also in one of his sets of lecture notes; it might be 'Fight Dirty'.

However, I have thought about it some more, and suspect that you won't be able to perform the effect. Well, you could with some reworking of the method, but I think it's probably not worth spending your money on (although I thoroughly recommend Andy's work, so it'll be worth it for other reasons).

Anyone know the name to the pad also?

Google says that it's called Bowl-a-Rama (get the pattern? ). I haven't seen a smaller pad that does the same, but there could be one. I'd have thought that 'standard' production techniques could do much the same. There are miniature versions of the bowling ball from briefcase effect, but they may only be suitable for spherical objects. I've not used one, and am never likely to!
