Scotch and Soda - for a good Spanish vanish...?

Postby caubeck » Oct 31st, '04, 06:04

Hi, this is my first post.

I am very interested in the Scotch and Soda coin trick, which I have yet to purchase. I usually research everything I buy for a week or two before making a decision, but in this case I am a little bewildered by the range of prices and makes.

There are British-American versions, American versions, purely British ones - this doesn't bother me too much as I moved from England to Spain some time ago and it's all "foreign coins" to my audience. (Come to think of it, any set using a Mexican coin would have a "Spanish" link!)

Can anyone recommend me a good set (and link), but one that doesn't cost too much? Or is that the wrong approach to this particular trick? How about the popular "Sterling" brand?

I have no idea how the coins work so I can't base my judgements on technical aspects.

Many thanks,

Chris

Hi

Scotch and Soda has almost become a classic of magic. To start off with there are many threads already on this subject, which could be found using the "Search" option at the top of the screen, or the review Index in the reviews room.

I have pasted some of the more obvious links below, but it is always worth checking first and adding a query like this to an existing link.

There is also an excellent resource for buying magic on the internet call www.bargainmagic.co.uk This website will allow you to compare prices with many of the UK based magic selling websites.

As well as the classic scotch and Soda there is also Eddie Gibson's "Coin Uniques", which are pretty much the same effect, although imo slightly easier to use. These come in a variety of coins, such as £1 and 1p, 2p and 10p and I believe a 2 Euro and something - although reviews here would suggest that that one isn't as well made.

The versions of the official scotch and soda would seem to be.
Half Dollar and Mexican Centavo
Half Dollar and old English Penny
As for the Scotch and Soda Euro version, I know nothing about it.
There is also an effect called dime and penny which I am sure is the same principle.

As for what is the best. It is really up to you. I would say that the same effects can be done with one and all, so it is all down to how you wish to present it. For ideas. look through some of the old threads.

There are also various booklets called such things as "25 ideas for..." that are wort looking at for ideas.

Hi!

Thanks for the tips.

Unfortunately it appears www.bargainmagic.com no longer exists, but I'll carry on shopping around.

Here in Spain there are two makes of gaffed coins immediately available to me: Sasco and Tango. I don't know whether one is any better at producing coins than the other, but I believe Tango is the main source of the dodgy gaffed euros. I will have to toss a coin to decide between the three makes - if it lands on its edge, I'll go for Tango.

Thanks again,

Chris

A fine site, thanks for the address.

In the end I plumped for the Johnson set and booklet at MagicWarehouse. Their shipping fees are spot-on, which is a little miracle in itself.
