Card Move Help.

Postby Marvo Marky » Dec 5th, '08, 14:34

Hello everyone, I have a card question.

I need a card switch to do a certain job.

Right, I need a switch that occurs just after the spectators card is selected. So, the card is selected and shown to the spectator, but not the magician. It is then tossed onto the table, but as it is tossed it is switched.

Now then, I consider myself to be a reasonably able card man. But all of the switches that work pefectly here (like the Drop Change, that spread-change one or even the DL) require the selected card to be turned over and thus revealed to the magician.

Is there a move that allows the card to be shown to the spec, switched as it is thrown to the table, but kept hidden from the magician?

I was thinking the spread pass but I think it may be a bit unnatural.

Cheers,
Mark.

Simple top change might work?

Oops forgot to mention - I have tried the top change in this context but since it is near to the start of the effect I find it difficult to create a strong enough off-beat to get away with it. Also my top change is s***e.

Thanks for the glide idea spudgun, I'll have a play with it. Although I love the glide I find it needs to be put into context very strongly, or else it just reeks of 'something funny going on'.

I think the move that I need has to be part of the natural 'pick a card' motion.

Righty ho - better get back to work because we're being inspected today. Oo-er.
Hope everybody is feeling very Friday-y :D

Forgive me if im getting the wrong end of the stick, but Derren's Velvet Turnover might work here.

If you perfectly master hand mucking, it should solve your problem.

How about holding a double, flashing the face to the spectator then Tenkai palming the flashed card as you toss the other to the table.

My approach would be to do a thumb riffle and seperate the two packets where the spec calls stop. Then hold the cards face toward the spec and use the hand holding the top packet to slide their selection upwards, revealing it to them but not you, and just add one as you display. Square as you come down and toss the X card to the table.

A little move i use, is when they say stop after you dribbled the cards, get a p. break above two cards on the lower packet. Then simply slide the second card with your fingers and show it to the spec.

Easy

Top change---mine sucks royally (as far as mechanics go) but I with misdirection I get away with it in every and any situation...just have to be able to misdirect and read people with it a bit. This sleight is worth its weight in gol (for anything I do anyway) and it is all misdirection for me...you don't have to be good at much if you are good at misdirecting...I feel that people should spend more time working on perfecting their audience control and misdirection than the mechanics of their sleights. You can get away with almost anything if you are confident enought to pull it off.

It's all very well to keep saying Top Change, but he has already said he finds it hard to create an offbeat at such an early and important moment in the trick.

You are one hell of a magician if you are going to misdirect them whilst you're holding their card they just selected card. They will be burning your hands no matter what, and even if my some fluke they're not, they will notice your hands going near the deck.

You just lack faith in your top change. Pretty much every sleight I do - at whatever stage of the trick - is visible if someone is staring intently at my hands.

If you are engaging your audience properly, they will only look at the cards when you direct them to, otherwise they'll be looking at your face.
