The Effect

You show 2 elastic bands stretched between the fingers of your left hand & proceed to make a couple of simple shapes with them, when you are done the one band is making a 5 point star between the strands of the other strands, when seperate the bands the one stays in the shape of the star - sort of like this...

It took me all of 5min to learn - maybe a little longer cos the written instructions aren't all that clear, but with the accompanying drawing it all falls into place.
I have performed it for a couple of collegues here @ work (as a stand alone effect as they have seen Crazy Man's Handcuffs before) & the reactions have been great


Overall

This is a great little elastic band effect that makes a nice follow up to something like Crazy Mans Handcuffs (the only other band effect I know - though that is going to be remedied as soon as I get home & have a look at "Band Shark)

Score: 10/10 - it's easy to do & learn; packs small & plays big
CUPS Rating - if your into Elastic Band Magic - 10
if your not & just want an add on to CMH - 8

We bought this in at Studio 9 probably 18 months ago after I saw the demo on JBTV and had expected there to be instructions for the full routine shown in the video. Be aware that this is not the case and the instructions only include the star shapes and not the penetrations. Despite this it is still a good buy, and did result in us shifting a few CMHs.

I love this routine. The reactions I've had are varied, but all positive. I agree - it takes about 5 mins to learn. The presentation of it took a while, in that i really felt it had the potential to create a 'magical moment' - kind of an intimate thing but I wasn't too sure of how to get that. Now I use it sparingly (cos you don't get too many aardvarks) and i think that part of the magic of it is giving the star away.

I did notice on one of the store adverts it suggested doing that, and I thought it a bit funny then. You are right. I suspect there is a place to get refils. Is there a web address or phone number on the packaging I wonder?

I believe that Str Gazer is actually one of their own effects, so it is a good place to buy.

Take a small rubber band (about the size of the star itself) and use a bulleting board and push pins. Start with the band around the first push pin, and press the pin into the board strongly. This will be the apex of the star - the top part. Now, with other push pins, stretch the band out from push pin to push pin, making a star on the bulleting board with the rubber band. Let it sit like that for several days to a week. Assuming that you've stretched the band fully, when you take it down you'll have your star band at the cost of a regular band.

With any trick the routine should be personalised to your own style so the fact no patter is included is just fine...
