props/illusion research

Postby robin » Dec 27th, '04, 03:19

hello all at talk magic,

i am currently researching the design and construction of magic tricks/props/illusions, sounds a little geeky i know, but i am trying to locate uk based magic designers/creators/builders/companies/workshops/enthusiasts/inovators etc.... to consult/discuss a new body of illusions i am planning to create during the next year. i am not a stage performer, but create more site specific self contained illusions.

if anybody has any information/recomendations of contacts here in the uk i would be very interested,

cheers
robin

i am really interested in automator style effects, and use a lot of electronics/motors/lighting/mechanisms etc with a lot of the work/illusions i create. as i do not present these as performed magic tricks, more as artistic curiosities that an audience will unexpectedly come across....

its just i am finding it increasingly difficult to find uk based contacts, as now most props/illusion designers are based in the states it seems,

anyone know of any?

ok i see now and i have to agree that designers that are open to general magicians are very few and far between and very expensive on our side of the pond.

why not try bhitting on the coledges and uni's you may be presently surprised as to how helpfull they can be regards fabrication and design help, provided they can write papers about the designs of course.

luckily i currently do have links with a london college that makes the fabrication and building of my work possible.

the creating of magic/illusion style effects is a reasonably new angle on my practise (within the last few years) and as my work evolves the effects i aim to achieve are getting more technical. although i am constantly reading and researching, i am beginning to get slightly 'bogged down' with the technical production side. books and plans and ideas are great, but often i find discussing an idea with someone else with an interest/knowlege in magic throws up new angles/methods of achieving results.

and you know what it is like with the good magic books, the ones you want to get hold of are always many hundreds of dollars away!
