This is going to be a savage rant. I am oh so sorry.

I performed the self working effect "rainman" from Lennart Green's Classic Green 7 to an audience of about 15, three of whom were magicians. If you've seen it, you'll know it is one of the most amazing self working effects ever invented. Quadruple prediction, and they so all the shuffling.

Everyone was absolutely blown away, especially the three magicians. After the performance, we have a chat about magic in general, and I could see the b*stards were all foaming at the mouth to know how it was done.
Of course, I didn't tell them. I said, trustingly, "if you want to learn it, invest in some of Lennart Green's material."

Picture the scene, I walk into the common room at school, and see one of the lads performing the effect. I didn't want to interrupt and being an optimist, I assumed he'd taken my advice and purchased it.

WOOOOHOOO NO.
One of the three, had illegally downloaded all 7 videos. He had then, burn them to disc, and gave them to the other two.
Now, not only do they have all the material, they are ruining it too.
They are looking for instant gratification and they are ruining effects for me.
I don't care how badly performed something is, if the specs have seen pretty much the same before, It's a tough job to win them over.

Now, I feel like sh*t. Not only do I feel responsible for cheating Lennart and losing potential routines, I feel like I've lost 2 good mates.,

I hate people, and I hate 92.437% of magicians.

Magicians keep secrets (sometimes) for a reason, let this be a lesson to you.

Just check it out on youtube, assuming its the same one (up and down cards in to piles) and I am always looking for impromptu card effects as its good to be armed and ready with a borrowed deck.
Just need to get V7 of this set then…. Or is it in hardback ?

I have a good mind to keep my mouth shut!

I'm already too distressed though, it's on volume 7.

I understand your fury. If they are magicians, they should recognize the effort put in to these sorts of things. They should respect such a thing, and purchase such works properly.

Illegal downloading of such work is unacceptable. It is unfortunate that such things are becoming increasingly popular among certain people, and seemingly easier for them to carry out.

The best thing one can do is to try to explain to them why they shouldn't do it. There are reasons, and if they refuse to respect those reasons, they will not be respected by others in their art.

You can download his DVDs?.... coooooool man. Where??

OK, calm down, just kidding.

Well, to be honest, what I don't get is why they are trying to copy you, instead of doing their own thing. It's a little sad. Sadder than ripping DVDs, which is sad enough

Then again , look on the bright side, you may be emulating you own group of fans, they'll start following you around everywhere soon, saying things like "do you know what Lenoir said the other day?", "Do you know Lenoir yeah, he's my friend, man, you know what he did like, he walked on water, cool man"

Alternatively if you don't have the patience to start your own cult, just kill them. Or not.

hehe. Go on, you know you want to, go on, I dare you. Bet you won't, bet you won't, bet you'll chicken out, nanananana.

When we're both in jail, think you'll have 5 minutes to teach me how to do a decent DL?

Come on, chill out, have a cup of chocolate  I'm sure they don't even have a girfriend, and no friends either for that matter

Good advice. Next time you blow one of these idiots away with a trick, make sure they know why you aren't going to tell them a thing any more.

Oh, and report them to FACT. (No, don't waste your time really, just glue all their cards together.)

Remember the difference between you and them, is that you put time and effort into making tricks work, they just see a trick they like and go about the quickest easiest way to do it (Not learn it just do it).

Some time in the future you'll have a new card trick, and they once again will ask where you learnt it. This time of course you will say, 'Why should I tell you? You'll just steal it from the people who've worked on it.'

And imagine if they download a tutorial on a trick that takes skill to perform, that will screw them right up.

Invoke not reason. In the end it is too small a deity.

Even better, just offer them "the ebook" for free

What's that? They can't figure out how the trick works? Oh dear...
