Spots on silk appear & disappear, What's the trick?

Postby Johnny Bravo » Dec 21st, '04, 06:35

I saw a trick the other day which I liked a lot.

The magi appeared with a plain handkerchief, threw some confetti over it & then the hankerchief was covered in spots.
Later in the evening another magi did the same effect in reverse.

I really liked this effect but have no idea of what it's called, can anyone point me towards somewhere selling the effect or where I can read up on it? Ta :)

Is it like any of these?

Polka Dot Shower silk change
"This is a Tarbell style colour changing silk, that goes from polka dots to solid black, and a bunch of white dots come off in your hand, so you can toss 'em in the air like confetti! Kids love the effect, even if it means Mom has to do a little vacuuming after the party!"

POLKA-DOT SILK (JUMBO)
"The performer shows a large silk which is a solid plain colour on both sides. He tosses a number of paper spots into the air, and as they flutter down the silk is swirled in the shower of spots. When the silk is now shown on both sides, it is Polka dotted, the paper spots having apparently fused on it.

The effect can be repeated in reverse, where you show the Polka dotted Silk, and as you I shake it, the spots fall off to the floor, leaving the foulard a solid plain colour."

It's also sometimes called 'The Leopard Silk', by Sitta.

I remember Stuart Hall doing it on 'It's a Knockout' in about 1981, when the British show's theme was magic.

That's the one AndyG, Polka Dot Silk.

Looking at the web page you linked to it seems like it's gimmicked (which is fine :D) does it involve any sleight or not? Thanks for the help & the link by the way.[/quote]

I don't know. :( I've not used this one myself but i suspect it might be the same method as the colour-change silks.

The colour changing silks, the only version of this I know involves a TT, is this how you mean or is there another version of colour changing silks I'm unaware of.

I want to be sure about this before I get it, like can it be performed in close up & again how much sleight is involved. Oh & it costs aroun £25 new, anyone have one for sale??? :D

I know of a good routine using a couple of TTs and 2 different coloured silks but that's not the one I was thinking about.

It's also known as the double colour changing scarves (took a while to find that link :) ).

I'm sure you've seen it.

the spot silk can be thought of as a change bag or the colour changing silk as mentioned by andy g.

there is basicly no slights involved as its self contained, i have a colour changing streamer that goes from rainbow to black / coloured confete
http://www.emagictricks.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=2641 which is similar in use and can be done quite close up and is suitable for table hopping if you inglude a tt for the spots

i don't have this version but its on my list but i have had a similar version in the past.

since when was the silk die done with a t.t? It uses a gimmick all of it's own, that being a die tube.
Sitta's leopard silk, is a self contained effect loosely based on the colour changing silk. This is also strictly a stage effect, as the method becomes easier to spot when close up.
If you are thinking of investing in one,it's an absolute must that you buy a good quality one.

...But you can use the die tube with much the same methodology that you would a TT.

i only mention th tt because if your going from table to table you will need a suply of spots or in my case rainbow confete, reloads can be done in your pocket as the rainbow silk goes to black transfering its colurs to a paddle and back again   then back to black and coloured confete   .

the die tube version of the colour changing silks can be done to change a white silk to spotted and back again and would be recomended for close up but does involve some moves to learn, weras sitta's is self contained but only good for stage / parlour magic.

hope this clears the different techniques for you.

I wouldnt do any confetti trick at tables. The consequences of some ending up in someones drink or food, are great.
