Blockhead Safety

Yes, the last guy made an important point...

Definitely sterilize the objects...whether it be nails or screwdrivers...

You don't know where the stuff was prior to you getting ahold of it...dirty factories, dirty store bins, whatever...and definitely never use galvanized or dipped nails...they have a rust proof coating on them...get the shiny ones...

I always wipe everything down with alcohol pads before I use them...

I'm not getting this one at all :?

Got the trick, no problem. Nice big ass nail. Tap it in with the top of a coffee mug (always handy and reverbarates nicely.)

But the reactions I get with it are rubbish! No one seems fussed or even grossed out. I had a much better response with the arm on the sidewalk twisty thing.

Best response when i put the nail in first, tucked it under the nostril and produced it without showing people where from!

Missing something here.

FF

PS. From my medical side I should say nobody should do this ever  . But if you must, sterile is nowhere near as important as strong. The nose is there to collect the c*** (not the best) in the air you breath so if you don't break the skin its safe. If you DO you've just shoved it over all the c*** (not the best) collected on the nasal cavity so you're stuffed anyway. But using a cotton bud as sombody suggested is dangerous because fibres, or god forbid the whole tip, could get left behind and cause irritation. Also be aware of irritation, it wants a smooth tip. Something smooth and hard with a rounded tip is best. I started with a 4 inch nail after i polished the tip to rounded head. Longer also means less chance of getting the whole thing stuck!

Like i say, nobody should do this!

Do it with whatever you have (THAT IS SUITABLE) in your surroundings. i use to walk round a club in hull with a straw in my face quite a lot.
now, had anyone seen a glow stick round here?

Man this topic is disturbing... I feel pressure in my nose just thinking about it and it's not nice... I'll stick with card magic.

This gets HUGE reactions for me. At my youth group I did it with a kebab skewer. As sort of a bluff, I had my head turned to a profile view as I inserted the skewer. Everybody thought I was sticking it behind my head or something, so they collectively asked me to turn and face them... I did, slowly.... HUGE FREAKOUT! That's the way I always present this, great way to build tension. People love it, it's one of my most requested effects just because it's so disgustingly awesome. At school I do it with a pen cartridge or coffee stirrer. I haven't had the guts to try the nail just yet.

PS: Careful inserting whatever you're using. When I did the kebab skewer, I went too far and felt it touch something in the back of my head!

I've been doing this one for a while now and just to echo what other people are saying:

- In my experience it should never be painful or difficult, if it is stop and take it out.
- Sterilize and clean the nail well - I always use a new nail each time and clean them with anti-bac spray thoroughly.
- Be aware of who or what is around you. When I (and my partner) do this on stage we get someone up to help us remove the nail. Yes, I know that this is pretty foolhardy - we minimize risk by only letting them hold the end of the nail and then pulling ourselves off it (we're also insured up to the eyeballs... sorry, didn't mean for that terrible pun to happen).

As for learning it - I never used a cotton bud, itched too much. Best thing I found was a (here comes the nerd in me...) fine detail paintbrush from Games Workshop - they're really well rounded and smooth at the end and about the right thickness for a nail too.

Just remember (cheesy voice over here probably...) be safe when you're doing this one.

Best
