Emcee/Host/Master of Ceremonies

Postby moodini » Apr 9th, '09, 03:55

I have been doing a bit more of this as of late...and always looking for some good sources of magic/gags/etc to fit into the evening.

Anyone got...

1) any ideas or items they care to share or part with (PM or email if you wish)

2) Got any references to good sources of material (websites, books, dvd's, etc) for this sort of thing

As an aside....I do have Peter Marucci's booklet on this topic and anyone that is into this type of thing should really look into. It is quite breif but straight to the point with some one liners, etc....the ideal kind of thing for some off the cuff stuff in your evening.

Any Tommy Cooper stuff goes down well in this role, funny, quick and often disastrous. Meaning that you are providing great entertainment!

I've been recommended to check out two PDF books by Graham Hey, available from Trickshop.com, 'Comedy Buffet' and 'At that funny stage' which contain a lot of one liners, stories and other bits of business. Apparently some are a wee bit risqué but can be cleaned up, some are clean but can be dirtied down depending on your audience!

Aldo Colombini has book on the subject (can't vouch for it, but it's precisely on point). It's called 'Your Host for Tonight: The Professional Emcee's Handbook'.

Finally, the long awaited book on how to MC is here! This is the professional MC's handbook that teaches you how to be the perfect host for your show. It includes tips, funny bits of business and invaluable information. 30 years of experience all over the world condensed in dozens of pages full of advice. The importance of rehearsal, how to perfectly introduce the acts, know the acts, handle the end of the acts, how to manage... stage managers, sound and lights, don't get trapped in the curtain, openings, stage standing ovations, intermissions, closing, curtain calls, life-saver lines, tricks and gags, comedy, you name it....it's here!

Hi Moodini;

I'm currently investigating my local Toastmaster club - stumbled accross this on their organisation web shop.

http://www.toastmasters.org/MainMenuCat ... S1076.aspx

There's also a couple of references in Geoffrey Durham's book on humour and one-liners. Can't think of them from the top of my head, will check tonight and let you know.

Cheers
LP

I'd have thought that the quickest way to find material would be a browse of the humour section in your local bookshop. Shops seem to be overlooked these days which is a great shame.

It's really nice to spend an hour or so browsing the shelves and then sitting down in the shop to fumble the pages

That's the line I've got at the ready in case I get caught browsing through these * aherm * artistic * books in the photography section. Lately I've also been investigating the history of the textile industry -

So, anywayzz....... back to Durham's book. He recommends Sid Lorraine's Patter, More Patter, and Gags, Routines and Patter.

For comedy lines he recommends Robert Orben's Screamline Comedy and Bits, Boffs and Banter.

I recommend heartily that you buy them.... then you can tell us what you thought of them
