Reflections on Tabula Mentis V

Postby Tomo » Apr 26th, '09, 12:43

The best yet. By far.

We were treated to about 4 1/2 hours exclusively dedicated to Docc Hilford's two-part lecture, and you could have heard a pin drop. Anthony's hypnosis lecture was great, especially for the subtleties he uses. It's always good to see how someone goes about the business of induction. I was very interested in his thoughts about breaking the whole process into blocks, and I think I wrote the most notes during his stuff. The opening round table discussion was a very good ice breaker and it helped me get straight some thought's I'd been having about conformation bias. The Alakazam demos were a small part the day but if there's a way of showcasing maybe a single effect from a few dealers each time, I think that will be come a very important and valuable part of future events.

A very useful day indeed. Thanks to Tim for not minding us lot all trampling through his funky venue, to Roni and Dr Todd for an excellent day, and to everyone who attended. Lots of laughs, lots of knowledge, and lots of fun. The only downside was that I had to leave at exactly 7pm to get a train that would ultimately be delayed at Milton Keynes for 30 minutes while waiting for the establishment to eject several football enthusiasts from Stoke. I missed the very end of Docc's System 88 lecture, and Losey performing some of her stuff. Sorry about that, but the UK rail network is a cruel mistress.

The next Tabula Mentis is on 21st November, and it looks like it's going to be a scream. Go into the kitchen, get a jam jar and wash it out. Now, put some money in it each week. By November you'll be able to afford to travel to London and get a hotel for a couple of nights. If you don't, you're missing out BIG time.

doccs system 88 is genius. :)

i tried to make running notes, but as usual, the subjects covered were just too interesting.so note book, was put away, and i sat back and watched, and listened..

firstly we had a round table session, with our own Simon Shaw, malchat, and spiritual medium and psychic entertainer Rudi Romanov. They used Max Mavens four main method theory, listed in prism as a starting point, but the discussion quickly changed direction, and turned into a debate on justification, particually with friends and family.
It was interesting stuff.

after a short break for refreshment, the main event of the day started with the first part of the wonderful Docc Hilford's lecture..

he started with his invisible dice routine, which includes a great variation on something we all know about.
he then moved on to his nightmare coins, as always a fantastic routine.
he then explained his tossed out deck, ( or as we now know it, the carefully handed out deck)
and a lovely book test, which fused good thinking, and korans news paper test together. a great routine.
lunch followed, and gave us all an excellent opportunity to catch up with gossip from friends old and new

after lunch, Todd gave a preview of his Rorschach deck. i can see many people investing in one of these fascinating decks.

next up, we had a demo of an un gimmicked add a number calculator, that can be purchased in any pound shops.

and a dealer dem by alakazam, and mark Elsdon, of effects including directors cut, trilogy, the cobra spike, ( which for once i have to say i enjoyed. mark has a great routine for it) and the bip book.

next our own Anthony Jacquin explained , with the help of 3 helpers, his special brand of entertainment. a fascinating demo of an area i knew nothing about.

and finaly, after a short break, we had part two of docc hilfords lecture.
starting with a wonderfully simple centre tear, we moved onto billets, and a handling the one ahead, including some great reading tips, and biuseness tips.

he shared a number of new items with us... hush hush stuff I'm afraid.. watch this space.

he then gave a full explanation of his system 88 reading programme.
fantastic! and clearly very accurate. i can recommend this to anybody wanting to add something new to their repetoir.

and another day came to an end.. and all that was left to do was for us all to pop next door, and spend some time with our friends in the pub.

it was nice to meet jon again, and Iain, Fairy, Tristan, todd, paul Brook, Roni, Rich,....and Gunnar.I must remember Gunnar. a top man. now i feel i want to visit Iceland one day.

a day full of fun, laughs, and many friendships.. what more could you ever want?

thanks again to Todd, Roni , Steve ,Tim , and all the others who make this wonderful day a day to remember every time

I was at a bit of a get together earlier - and did system 88 readings about 4 times. They went awesome and even my wife thought so and She is so demanding and hard to please (Thanx 2-5-8)
I also had the courage to try a couple of the minor bits from reality is plastic.

What got me, was how friendly everyone was (One of the reasons i dont go to Big Conventions) and it was nice to meet a few people off here (Dale:)

It was really nice of Docc to give me System 88 and to allow me to paypal him when he gets home (His idea)

And i did'nt wee myself!!

Lyndon

Despite being hideously tired and spotty (42 and still getting zits. Who'd have thunk it?), I finally met our very own Ms Snuff, who had some very interesting ideas on the subject of kid's telly!

They say that the best place at a party is the kitchen, and they'd be right. We all certainly had a good laugh at the back in the kitchen area and didn't miss a thing. The only thing that gets me is that I have no idea who everyone is when they use their real names rather than usernames. Speaking of which, I saw my first Talk Magic lapel pin.

That's the only glitch but even that's getting better. Sometimes you see someone repeatedly looking at you and it takes them ages to come over and say hello. Just do it. As I say, I'm hopeless at mapping real names to usernames. I still call Iain Abraxus to his face!

Maybe it should be an unwritten tenet that each attendee should say hello to at least one person they don't know.

Said hi to you Tomo but you were busy with food :D

My first but really enjoyed it, who was the guy with the puzzle at the end that was great.

Docc was a really nice guy and we had fun watching him in the bar later on, he still has my lighter though

I used to hate doing that on training courses. I used to make up silly things. "Hi, I'm Jon. I'm a used irony salesman, heavyweight boxer, and international embroidery champion."

I understand - But i teach things like that and it is shocking to see how many performers can't actually stand up and talk about themselves.

Anyway - Hi i am Lyndon and i am an addict!!

Once again, huge thanks to Todd, Roni and Tim for all their work.

I'm going to go along with the general consensus, and say that this was the best Tabula Mentis yet (although I couldn't go to the very first one). I think the pacing was good, and Docc was probably the best lecturer we've yet had (and we have had some great ones). His personality really made the time fly by (well, even more than usual at the TMs).

I did feel a bit sorry for Sarah, though. She was almost curled into a ball by the end of the reading!

Anthony's lecture was very good too; it was great to see him live, and putting those techniques into practice. The round table was also useful. It wandered off topic abit, but in many respects I think it ended up being more useful that way.

So Lyndon is artemisdarcmagick (or vice versa)? Shame I don't have eyes in the back of my head, or I'd know what you look like. All I could see out of the corner of my eye was a red shirt.

I saw Tristan a couple of times during the day, but he wasn't wearing his dog collar, so the penny didn't drop as to who he was on here. :) I was the guy chatting to Fairie during the afternoon break, when a number of us made a desperate bid for some fresh air.

The only bad things about the day were not having time to go for a drink afterwards (had a very nice meal, though), forgetting to sign Docc's list, and not being able to attend the other big event.
