Steampunk!

Postby Craig Browning » May 15th, '09, 13:01

(start here if you aren't certain what Steampunk is http://www.answers.com/main/ntquery?s=steampunk&gwp=13 and http://steampunkworkshop.com/)

Steampunk takes on several different facets but the common factors tend to be a blend of the modern with the Victorian/Edwardian (Industrial era). Everything from crystal clear pocket watches that expose all of the gears to cigarette cases, lighters, iPods, Altoid Boxes and more, set with an "antique-ish" gear-work imagery that looks as if Jules Vern stepped into the world of Hell Boy.

Long story short, I'm looking for resources of non-assembled items i.e. gears of various size, ornate metal trims, angles, etc. Anything ornate, cool, different and of course inexpensive. Full gear assemblies would be considered provided I can make them fit into the designs I'm working on.

If you have sprocket drive wheels, inner-locking gear assemblies, etc. just laying about and collecting dust, I'm interested.

Should anyone be interested in this theme, I'd be glad to share some other links and resources. Steampunk has one branch dedicated to late 19th century science i.e. Tesla, Edison, etc that's way cool, many of you may appreciate.

When it comes to the gears, I'm after large industrial wheels... six and ten inchers, not the little'ns

HERE'S THE DEAL... I'm tricking out my wheelchair. I have some ideas and am corresponding with Jake von Slatt when it comes to creating something that's fun... artistic and "practical".

I get a new chair next year so I want to trick this one out for the home show market and character, leaving the other alone. I'll also have the antique Wicker back (1890s) unit that's presently undergoing some special TLC (I'm just not certain how I'm going to fit all of them in the apartment... it's just not that big).

With the "new" (revised) Curator image I'm evolving the Steampunk look and feel is perfect in that it allows me to do some simple alterations to existing Victorian odds & ends I already have, stitch up some new period shirts, slacks and frock coats and voila!

I should probably point out to folks that this is the first major step I'm taking on a project I've been developing for about three years now; parts of the act being well over 8 years old (personal effects of my own). The real kicker being that we have at least another 3-5 years of investment before I believe it's going to be suited for the kind of market and marketing I want to place it in (a class A hotel in Manhattan or maybe San Francisco... I do miss it so).

I bring this out just as food for thought to those that either wait till the last minute to pull a "show" together... push for bookings and don't have an act in place... haven't really thought things through from the theatrical side of things (first) as well as the logical business course of action i.e. what the theme is/claims (establishing "presence" and "value"), knowing who your market sector is and how to appeal to them. This really is a BUSINESS and even if you're just someone having fun with your hobby, getting your duckies lined up... the professionalism you place into your act(s)/image really does make all the difference in the world.

Sorry for being so long winded (like that's anything new) but I am jazzed about this project... then again, I got about an hour's sleep last night and I'm bouncing off the walls (just love insomnia and sleeping pills that don't work)

If you wanted to go all out you could base it on a Segway so that it's on two wheels!!!

you know, the chair on wild west was quite an impressive piece of kit.

it was based in part, on the old girl on a swing, and head on swords sideshow Illusion.

though most of the time, it was camera trickery, some of it was live.

eBay is always a good place for a nosey around. Odd bits and pieces generally go for very cheap.
