In the '70s, there were warnings about bullseye panes in bay windows doing that. I think they were issued on grounds of good taste.

Many an occult shop have gone to blazes for this very reason

I heard the BBC interview with the said woman on the way home tonight and she confirnmed that she only had the crystal balls for ornamental purposes and had no interest in clairvoyancy.

The interviewers were trying to line her up for all of the usual puns but she wasn't having any of it

Well I admit that they can be a good decoration, tho they ended up burning down her house.. So now she will probably think of better ways to decorate her place.

I think it's sad that she doesn't have insurance.

When I was a child, I used to torture and kill small insects with a magnifying glass and the power of the sun. I remember it being most satisfying. Don't worry; I have not turned into a serial killer or anything of the sort. (I stopped at insects and did not move on to small mammals). I am a perfectly healthy adult now.

Even so, I'm going to make sure I never upset you in the future.

In truth, if one is to follow the traditional view of the Scryer/Crystal Gazer the item used, be it a witches mirror, crystal ball or whatever, would be kept covered and in the dark other than when it was in use and even then, only a very small amount of indirect candle light was permitted.

I know of one such sphere that has been handed down in a "gypsy" family for at least 3 generations. I it kept in a small locked chest; other than it's own bag the thing is wrapped in several layers of heavy fabric so as to guard against any possibility of light exposure.

Why?

True Metaphysical beliefs suggest that crystals become imbued with the images and energy they are exposed to when left out in the open; kind of serving as a "memory" collector. A sphere of this sort, set aside for the exclusive purpose of divination would only see moon light when being cleansed and "consecrated" and from that point forward, not allowed to know light again... until it would be passed from one seer to the next in line.

My favorite such items however, are the black bottom predecessors to the modern day Bird Bath. A version of this still exists in several ancient temples throughout Greece & Rome but the use of a reflective pool can be traced even further back.

Given situations of this sort and how often it happens, I'm surprised more of my Pagan cousins aren't getting back to simplicity

Acrylic balls could set fire too...so, if you're willing to do some contact juggling, the same warning is valid.
