Ah, thank you, Mark. A quick search revealed a TM review. It sounds like a nice little effect.

Is that just a copper tube? Very cool!

Barton: Have you read the Bible, Pete?
Pete: Holy Bible?
Barton: Yeah.
Pete: Yeah, I think so. Anyway, I've heard about it.

Yup, copper tube and a magnet; as the magnet moves down the tube the magnetic field sets up a current in the tube, however, the current causes its own magnetic field which tends to oppose the change of magnetic flux, hence slowing it down.

Interestingly, the shape of the magnet also influences the field and therefore the rate of descent.

Don't plumbers use copper pipes when installing things like radiators?

Yep.

I Can not remember the millimeters of each type but that one was rather thick i think it may have been 12mm.

Good stuff but its a pain to wire wool it to keep it looking clean after souldering.

That's true - but I must admit Newton's Nightmare left me a little cold.

From the spectators point of view, it could be that the tube may have just had vaseline on the sides that caused the object to pass through slowly.

With this video, the wider tube, and the fact that you can actually see the magnet travelling in slow motion was amazingly impressive.

Now I just need to get a bit of copper tube like that and a magnet of the correct circumference. Also if you had another metal object made that wasn't magnetic, but looked the same you have the makings of a much more impressive (imo) version of Newtons Nightmare.

Thanks for posting. Very spooky.

It sounds like Newton's Nightmare is the economy version of this scientific marvel. They should do a premium version; NN Elite, if you will.

There is another "New Version" out there, which has holes i the tube, so as to change the speed of the nut/Ball falling.

I must admit when i was shown the effect (If you can call it that) i literally went "oh" and asked some one to show me a card trick :D
