Fold Up Portable Close Up Mat

Postby Johnny Bravo » Mar 2nd, '05, 10:25

Does anyone have any decent links to any smart fold up close up mats. Cards for magic (as always) have a Shuffle-Mat by John Corneluis which seems ideal bar its size which when opened is only 215mm x 145mm.

So am looking for something a tad larger? Ta muchly.

One solution is the felt covered jewelry boxes, these act as both a container for some of your close up stuff and a close up mat. Very useful, personally I have the PK bolt illusion which comes in it's own case but the cheapest you can get this for is £75 so you may just want to try a jewelry type shop.

Go to a stationers, and buy an a4 sized document holder. The type with an a-4 note pad inside.
These are often padded, and make a lovely surface to practice on.
This could be covered with fablon, to give is a more appealing look. This then gives you a 2 X a4 surface, plus the pad inside can be used to write predictions etc.
You also have some pockets inside for those little props.

I have a similar solution to that offered by happy toad but instead of a jewelry box I bought one of the brushed alluminium style cases from B&Q for about £14. These are similar to the photographers cases and come in a variety of sizes with various adjustable dividers inside to keep your magic tricks and protect them during transportation.

I simply cut a couple of old mouse mats to size (same thickness), glued them to one of the outer surfaces and then covered these with some felt. Works a treat as a mobile work surface.

It's not really an optical illusion - it just looks like one!

Those cases are now £7.99 in Woolworths.

Then even better value. These are excellent for storing and transporting magic triack, effects etc. I may have to buy another for future use at that price!
