Magnets and mobiles

Postby Replicant » Oct 7th, '09, 16:19

I've been given a leather case for my iPhone (I don't even have the phone yet). It's one of those cases with a magnetic closure. Aren't these type of cases supposed to be bad for mobiles? I'm no expert but I don't think an iPhone will be too happy being in close proximity to a couple of magnets. Any thoughts?

I've been thinking of getting a leather case too seeing as I've already cracked the screen once and it cost me about £80 to get it repaired.

There are a whole bunch of cases on Amazon and I don't think I've seen anyone mentioning that the magnets were a problem in the customer reviews.

A more important thing to look out for is that the cover doesn't obscure any parts of the phone as there are a couple of sensors built into the front which could screw up the operations if they're covered up.

not sure about iphones, but blackberry phone cases have a small magnet in them to lock the keypad and wheel controls.

i would have thought they'd have been user tested, surely?

"ya know that case you designed, trevor?"

"yeah...looks good eh..."

"yeah great, we really liked it...just one thing..."

"oh?"

"yeah, that dirty great big magnet you put on it - did you test it?"

"....oh..."

Now there's an idea!

I emailed the manufacturer and they came back to me with this reply, which I found very amusing for some reason...

The magnets have no adverse effect on the iPhone 3G/3GS. If they did, we would have used Velcro.

Good answer, I suppose. Here's the case I've got. It's very nice...

I've been checking out iPhone cases and other goodies and I have never seen so many accessories for a phone before. My gob was thoroughly smacked.

On this related point I keep two phones in my pocket and have a very strong magnet in it... It's not a PK but telling you what it is would be exposure. In any case I have two of these things in my left and right pockets, which I keep all sorts in: wallet, deck of cards, keys, etc.

Despite this set up on previous nights out with the set up, my phones have been fine, although after last night (performing magic for some friends in a bar), both have stopped working. A call to 3 helpline (the network) worked out that the ear speaker is broke, but it works fine on speaker phone. The other phone, my French network phone was just a cheap pay as you go, which is absolutely ruined!

Has anyone else had problems with this? I guess I knew it was inadvisable, but seeing as it wasn't a PK style magnet thought I'd get away with it, esp bearing in mind the numerous times in the past I've had this pocket set up.

Any tales of woe out there?

in around 1979, i took a small U shaped red and black magnet, and dragged it across the tv...

all the colour gathered around that magnet as i merrily whizzed it across the screen...

i wasnt too popular that evening...

That reminds me of the last tv I had in my bedroom before the one i've got now. It changed it's mind every day, one day all green, next all red and another day blue. Much fun :?

Maybe it was just reacting to your emotional states, like a mood ring.

Oh for the days when a telly needed occasional "physical chastisement" or "percussive maintenance"...

Tomo that one did respond to that for a while then just took to staying red, maybe it was a mood ring and picked up on my anger?

The Blackberry has a magnet built into the case to turn it onto battery save mode, so I dont think the magnets would harm the i-phone...plus there not the same kinda magnet that us lot play around with...there a different compound.

All this talk of TVs and swirling acid colours remind me of that novel by John Birmingham: "He Died With A Falafel In His Hand". It centres around a neurotically pedantic man living with messy and eccentric individuals, some of which are junkies who irritate him by putting bits of coloured tissue paper onto the tv to enhance their acid trip.

It's worth having for the title alone and is actually quite amusing
