They've closed it down some time ago.

Correct - It's closed down but Penguin are still advertising a European site despite all orders being shipped from the States.

Not too good if you unexpectedly get stung for import duty

It's not really an optical illusion - it just looks like one!

Hasn't this actually been defunct for well over a year now?

Bit naughty, to still be advertising a UK 0800 contact number, isn't it?

Well, just to bring an old topic up - I looked on http://www.penguinmagic.com/europe/ and saw the freephone number (0800 085 5146) and tried ringing it - it doesn't exist, so I sent an email asking what was going on (I obviously didn't know that the UK site had closed down  ) . I got the following reply:

Hi James:

Thanks for your inquiry. We closed our UK warehouse last November. Orders are now placed and shipped from the USA at www.penguinmagic.com. All prices listed on the website are US Dollars and must be paid in US Dollars. Foreign orders are shipped AIRMAIL via the US Postal Service. Delivery usually takes 2-3 weeks. Foreign Shipping is $ 9.95 for one item, $ 10.95 for two items, and $ 11.95 for three or more items UP TO 3 LBS. If your order is over 3 LBS we will notify you of the additional shipping charge necessary.

Thanks

They could at least update the homepage on the European site. Instead it lets you look through all their goodies and then when you click buy-it-now, you get the following message:

Update for European Customers
For faster service, please place your orders through www.penguinmagic.com. We apologize for any inconvenience.

You will need to re-add your items to the cart to proceed.
Don't forget to check our full catelog of special order items (see the SOC link on the right).

Sincerely,

Maxwell Murphy

Oh well  .

QUESTION:
If we can sue McDonalds for making us fat and cigarette companies for giving us cancer; why can't we sue Smirnoff for all the ugly gits we've sh*gged ??

Ah. Just to resurrect an old thread...

I too was lured by the cheap prices. Having taken a fleeting glimpse of one effect in particular I was even blase enough to not bother to collect an effect I left with a friend on a night out as i intended to get a new shiny version off Penguin Magic.

I feel like a kid in a candy store having found a treat to purchase with my newly acquired pocket money only to be told by the shopkeeper that I'm not allowed in here anymore.

Damnation and curses.
