Classic Palm

Postby flaw07 » Jan 25th, '10, 06:04

So I recently found a video by David Stone online and ordered it, and I'm enjoying it, but I have one problem. I can't seem to pull of the classic palm very well. Been trying rather hard, and nothing is clicking. I'm trying to do many of the tricks the same way he does in the video. I do OK with my left hand, but can't for the life of me get it with my right. Can I continue and just readjust some of the angles, or should I really take the extra time and learn the techniques with my right hand?

Fiddle about with the positions in the hand until you find the position that suits you.
Years ago I had great difficulty learning the classic palm from books. I studied the pictures and the instructions but I just couldn't do it. Then one day Percy Press gave a lecture and he accidentally flashed the palmed coin in his hand. I was intrigued to see that it was positioned in a different way than was illustrated in all the books.
I then went home and experimented and put the coin in a different position and I could palm coins properly very soon after.

Also David Roth pretty much says to just keep it in your hand for the entire day and keep doing that for awhile.

Another thing is that if you can muscle pass, that should help a lot.

i walked around with coins in classic palm for weeks, you eventually get there.

just keep persevering, and practice with different size coins, until the penny drops, or rather doesn't

Try it while you are doing something else, like making a cuppa or watching telly. Thats what I am doing at the moment, trying to get it to just feel natural. Pretty much the same thing I did when learning to palm cards, the more you practice the more you get the feel for it and eventually it just becomes comfortably natural.

Tip: Dont try it whilst making soup, I dropped a pound in my lunch the other day : :?

Also remember that if you get your misdirection right no-one should be burning your hand so tiny errors are not too important.

You may be trying to use a coin that's too large or small; as James says, try different sizes. I started with half-crowns many years ago which were about right for me; now I can palm anything down to a 5p, even though I have dry hands that are a problem for many sleights.

Also try other palms instead, especially the finger palm and the edge palm. Obviously it depends on what you want to do with it.

I learned everything from Hugard's "Modern Magic Manual" (1p on Amazon as of yesterday!) but I can recommend Ian Kendall's Basic Coin video CD.

I would second the endorsement of Ian Kendall's Basic Coin video CD. The classic palm and a host of other things are very thoroughly explained. Of course learning any sleights with your non dominant hand is going to take a bit longer - but it's well worth it. Your hand will eventually obey your instructions.... you just have to show it who's boss!
