I suppose the thinking is that your average layperson is aware of "funny" coins. They are not! Additionally, various handling techniques will convince them that all is kosher. If they are already convinced that the coin and bottle are real and normal, what benefit is there to having it signed?
Just my opinion. First time I did this trick was over 40 years ago. It is as strong today as it ever was.
