I'm sure we've all been learning new routines or moves and come across something that just doesn't look like it'll work. But then you give it a try in the live environment and it works beautifully.

My most recent example was with the peeks on the James Brown and Lee Smith DVDs. When you know what they're doing it seems so obvious that you can't believe you'll get away with it - but you do! And of course when you are first starting out in card magic it's hard to believe you can do a top change without every noticing.

Are there any moves that you thought couldn't possibly work, but their effectiveness "in the field" means they are now a regular part of your armoury?

Hardly a regular part in my armoury, but I'm amazed that the flushtration count works.

The top change. Everytime. Just one of those things that every fibre of me screams "it shouldn't work!!" yet it does. Again and again and again... Gotta love it!! :D :

Oh yeah I'm with you on this one. I don't do it much, but when I do part of my brain is going "FFS - what's wrong with you people - didn't you see what I just DID?!?!"

(Maybe they did but are too polite to point it out)

With a bit of confidence, and a bit of patter you can get away with anything.

The James Brown peek in Reverse Engineering is unbelievably cheeky. I really had to force myself to do this the first time I put this trick out. But as with everything James does you have to do it to find out that he really means what he says in the DVDs. The other peek is clever rather than cheeky and I have not used it yet but I have to agree with The Stoner about both of these.

Me and the guy I work with refer to this as "balls out" magic, and it is by far the most satisfying kind. It is also the best way to achieve real miracles - stop worrying about getting caught and you can produce some incredible effects.

-The Hoy book test
-Psychokinetic touches
-Rub a dub vanish
-When someone picks a card and it appears under the box (the one where you just place it there) ... In fact, cba, the list goes on and on.
In fact, pretty much everything worth performing is 'balls out' so to speak- I've been caught a few times with lateral and tenkai palms, elegant card switches but I've never been caught doing the top change- funny isn't it. :D
