Eshly, at a recent competition, he performed a lottery prediction that you would die for. He has a lot of talent, believe me.

I'll take you're word for it. I've not seem much of him except of his Youtubed stuff, which seemed sub-par.

Having said that, he's done well for himself - can't fault him for that :)

Even my dad phoned me up this morning raving about Dynamo's Lottery routine on the show last night :-)

We can all say what we like about him... but, let's face it, we weren't the ones asked to appear on a prime-time charity show likely to attract millions of viewers, were we?

He's clearly got something going for him!

Yeh, but to be fair and play devils advocate, by that logic Peirs Morgan has talent. :P

Is it on Youtube? I want to see this routine xD

Edit:

Thats not a mentalism trick, just a money change. :(

It's probably on the BBC Iplayer?

(And, on the Piers Morgan subject - I would suggest that he does have talent... let's not forget he started off as an entertainment reporter on The Sun before moving onto the Editor's positon - and from there on he's made quite a career for himself. Just because we don't like him, doesn't mean he's not talented in his own field! :))

Fair point too. He isn't a moron.

My point was just because someone is on tv, doesn't mean they are talented - look at just about any american sitcom (actors/script writers know what I mean).

Dynamo is a good card guy, but he needs more charecter me thinks. Having said that, I'm unlikely to ever be as famous as him, but I can hope :P

Just to point out, that wasn't the same effect I refer to. It was a devilishly clean lottery prediction. Quite a few months ahead of Derren's too.

His talent is undeniable, however his overall performance... not so much

Am I wasting my time trying to develop routines which actually involve people, rather than just practicing waving my hands around and have something interesting happen?

An appropriate analogy - I think. I play music in a bunch of bands, and an old guitarist of ours was great at firing out solos. They sounded great, looked great and even smelt great... but as soon as we came to writing new material, he didn't know one chord from another - or how to do anything interesting that wasn't "flashy". He had memorised fret-board shapes and facial expressions. He's a stunt guitarist... not a musician.

He may not have the greatest of personalities, but I think, like Blaine, he tries to let the magic speak for itself.
Undoubtably he has some skill, and a good management team behind him and is obviously doing something right. I lot of back-biting goes on amongst magicians and I think that if less time was spent criticising people like him on forums and more time spent honing their own acts, they may be in the same position.

You rarely see people like Dynamo contributing to forums because they are too busy working! lol!

Good luck to him and the trick with the lottery tickets was good and got a stunned reaction.

Actually Banachek, Richard Osterlind and many many others are regular contributors over on the Cafe, and they are just about as famous as it gets amounst Mentalists.

Are you on TV performing magic? No
Are you on a sitcom? No.
There's a reason these people are on the TV doing these things.

And are you, YOU, seriously nocking Dynamo's charactor? You get up in front of a few million people and do a card trick!!!! For Fucks Sake!

We sit back here mocking Stephen for getting up and doing his thing when we wouldn't be able to do a fraction of what he's done! Seriously, if anyone thinks they can get on tele and do a better job than him then why aren't you doing it?

Lawrence... I don't think anybody is "nocking" his character - but there are a large number of folk here who feel he has very little. Getting up on TV has nothing to do with things... am I supposed to give him a little extra respect because of it? Extra credit? No, I'm not. Yes, I respect the fact that his career in magic is going very well... but that doesn't mean I think he's particularly good. In fact, I find him slightly uncomfortable to watch.

There IS a reason folk like him are on TV - reputation, management and contacts. I envy your faith in the system.

He is on TV performing magic - that doesn't mean we all have to clamp our mouths shut about what we think. These are the same thoughts we have regardless of him being on TV or not.

I really hate when debates sink into "well... why aren't you doing it?" territory. It's a very closed stance - your mind is made up. He is on TV - doing what he does - he must therefore be great... why else would he be there - I must have no negative opinion towards him from now on because I am not doing what he does.

For f's sake Lawrence, why does this tone have to come into the discussion? If you actually read Eshly's post, there is a level of respect there which is more than you are crediting him.

I'm not sure if any of this is valid though, since I am not an Elite member, and have almost 3000 posts less than you.

Wow, this thread sure got heated :)
I agree that being on telly means squat these days, and is more who you know than quality of talent. Heck, even Derren Brown was only on tv in the first place because of his friendship with Jerry Sadowitz.
Wether we rate his performance or not, he has took the time to perform for charity, to help others. Surely this is a good thing ? He may not be the best magician out there but ive seen far worse. The guy obviously has respect for magic, and his audiences seem to like him, regardless of what we think. I say good luck to him :)
