Dear old Ratty once said to mole that .....
There's nothing . . . absolutely nothing . . . half so much worth doing as simply messing around in boats.
Never a truer word spoken! Anyone who hasn't had the pleasure of messing around in boats simply hasn't lived.
It's never quite the same if you just rent a rowing boat or a dinghy or something for an hour or so - but having a bit of time without pressure it get it back to a rental place... oh wow. Out of this world.
One of my favourite things in the whole world is a canoe laden with a few beers, some food, the means for making fire, a couple of bits of camping gear (maybe a tent, maybe not - generally not most of the stuff people take though) and some good company. All that's needed then is a lake with some very remote camping spots - preferably on islands - to eventually paddle to when you decided you've had enough messing around in boats.
Waking up part way through the night to the fire starting to die (chuck a few more logs on) and seeing nothing but stars and a few branches overhead is something that I really can't put into words... and waking up to embers, a nice sunrise (sleep on an East shore for that) and your boat pulled up on the beach a few yards away is pretty much as good as it gets.
The Water Rat really was one of the great philosophers of our time.
