Scrabble Dumbs Down

Postby Tomo » Apr 6th, '10, 16:40

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/8604625.stm The new version of the rules allows proper nouns (names of things, people, celebrities, etc.)

If you play Scrabble for the intellectual challenge, it's a travesty, but if you do an effect based on Scrabble, it may make things easier.

I didn't know that you couldn't use names as it was? I always have when I've played it.

It's all irrelevant. Everyone knows that the correct way to play Scrabble is to try to come up with the most deviant, offensive and obscene words possible.

Ignore the scoring system: the winner is the first to make their opponent say something along the lines of: 'that's just plain wrong', 'why do you even know that word?', or 'I feel sick now'.

Doesn't everyone use proper nouns anyway ?

and what about rude/naughty words ? We award 20 extra points for every very rude word in our version of the rules.

I bought the Offical Scrabble Dictionary in January - so that's £4.99 wasted!!!

What next I wonder, a Cluedo which takes pity on you and gives you the answer if you don't manage to work it out in less than a minute? A version of Monopoloy where you can print all the cash you need? Snakes and Ladders with no snakes? (Actually, that would probably be Ladders and Ladders..... :? )

I have a rather strong dislike for the game. My mother comes up with words like 'Xenaphobe' and 'Austrolapithicus' on a triple word score and of course the X ends up on a triple letter score. And I get 'bus'.

They could really bring the format up to date by incorporating numbers into the game. So you would be allowed things like sk8 and fri10 innit. :D
