You have to die before you know what it is like to live

Postby Beardy » Apr 29th, '10, 21:15

I did a small cabaret show last tuesday evening, trying a few new things that I hadn't attempted before.

Here is the video:

You can see me fall flat on my ass before picking it up at the end.

Awful presentation, but then again, not bad for the first attempts at the effects!

Enjoy!

As always, all comments appreciated!

I know what it's like trying new material, and I know what it's like when it doesn't exactly go to plan, so fair play. As you ask for comments:

Stand still, stop waving your hands. It makes you look nervous and unsure of yourself (and even if you are nervous and unsure of yourself, it's best not to let on). Watch the video back, specifically watching yourself, and you'll go "Why am I doing that with my arms?".

I liked it. It was very good Chris. A bit ballsy at points but ballsy's good. My only complaint is, why wasn't there a crucifixtion?

Invoke not reason. In the end it is too small a deity.

Lose the David Baddiel impression and you're there. :)

I think you probably already know but you need to eradicate the dead time. You also should cue that the audience applaud your participant all the way to the stage.

I might PM you about the first effect.

Very nice. I was a little concernend that your volunteer on the second video was going to be to boisterous and distracting to the audience but his reaction at the end was even better as he went from being a loud-mouthed show-off to a quiet little confused church mouse. :D

Also, going by the first vid, it would appear to be a very bad idea to tell a drunken university audience to talk amongst themselves for a bit. Maybe you could have some horrible lift music playing whilst you do your bit with your volunteer in future. The tackier the better as it could get some laughs out of the audience which would be attributed to you rather than themselves- if they can amuse themselves by joking around, they don't really need you which is why you had a struggle getting their attention back afterwards.

On the whole, it was very good, and if you can hold your own whilst facing that audience, you shouldn't have any worries with more sedate crowds.

The first one was a bit too Derreny for my liking. Sorry if that comes across as a bit blunt. I don'tt like it when Derren 'explains' his imainary method explicitly, so make it obvious, make it blatant but don't shove it down their throats.
And for future reference, f is a fricative. V is also a labio-dental fricative and is indistiguishable to a lip reader from it's unvoiced counterpart. Just a lesson in linguistics for you :D
