Well, Emotions Revealed by Paul Ekman is probably the best place to start, but before you do, what is it you want to be able to do with mentalism?

Simon Scott

If the spectator doesn't engage in the effect,
then the only thing left is the method.

That has very little to do with 'mentalism', by the way. Mentalism is more... in fact, pretty much nearly entirley, about trickery. If you look to people like Derren Brown- they are mentalists in the sense that they are using tricks and saying they use micro-expressions and influence e.t.c. It is unanimous that the bible of mentalism- and the starting point- is the '13 steps to mentalism'. However, previous magic knowledge is required- don't forget, if you are taking inspiration from Derren, that he is a superb magician. If you are interested in magic, then there have been billions of threads already about where to start learning about that.

Although what you're talking about (although it is not 'mentalism' as you know it) is very interesting and if that is what you wanted to learn about, I think 'unmasking the face' is a superb starting point. In fact, pretty much anything you can get your hands on by Ekman is well worth the money and then some imho.
But it is no light subject. Avoid all the tacky 'body language' books aimed primarily at busy buisnessmen and women... It is a serious acedemic subject and should be treated as so.

Good luck.

The ”Search“ function does wonders here. This has been discussed in several threads here in TM. A proper introduction would also be in order :)
