Traditional Clothing On a Budget

Postby Hatter » Jun 10th, '10, 00:04

I know a lot of you are contemporary magicians and just wear suits (or jeans) to perform, but I'm a little backwards. I started out wearing the top hat and learned magic because I had people asking me if I was a magician.
So, for those of you who like fancy tailcoats and the like, I have a suggestion: http://www.myowntuxedo.com/.

I bought a bunch of stuff off of there for a formal dance recently and was quite pleased when the items I ordered actually came. If you buy it used, you can get a full set of tails for $50, which google tells me is like 34 pounds. (I have no idea what shipping from Arkansas to GB is, though)

In addition, top hats are stupid expensive. More than a hundred dollars, usually. If you're doing a really nice show, you probably can afford that, but I'm not giving a rabbit the chance to c*** (not the best) in a hundred dollar hat. So I just buy mine for ten bucks at a local costume shop. I've only met one person who can tell the difference.

So, discussion-wise, anyone else wear the classical 18th/19th century magician wear and or know cool places to buy fancy frilly clothing?

(also, do forgive me if this post is in the wrong section. I have no idea where it should go)

Try www.gentlemensemporium.com. Can be expensive, do a lot of Victorian, 19th Century, etc. clothes

It's an excellent 'store' very helpful and they seem to stock items which just aren't available elsewhere at reasonable prices.

If you're looking for some decent clothing at good prices then I'd recommend that you at least check out your local wedding hire store.

I was recently looking to buy a good quality top hat and didn;t want to pay the £70 or so that they cost new. My local hire shop had a good selection of ex-hire toppers for sale and I bought three for £5 each.

Excellent condition and had only been worn around a dozen times and cleaned after each hire.

They had silk waistcoats in a variety of colours for £7 each and ex-hire suites from £25 depending on size.

If they don't have what you want then the most you have spent is 15 to 20 minutes but if you strike lucky then you'll save yourself a lot of money.

It's not really an optical illusion - it just looks like one!

I've tried gentleman's emporium, hadn't the money at the time.
Dat: That's brilliant! I have no idea why that didn't occur to me before. Odds are they wouldn't have my size on tailcoats (I'm built like Jack Skellington), but for things like vests....

Give it a try as I'm well built myself  Can't buy anything off the peg yet the one I went to stocked up to 56 long jacket size although they didn't have any second hand ones in my size
