I have an amazing idea for an effect.

This new effect will be the most impressive piece of magic since Paul Daniels got Debbi Magea to marry him!

The only problem is that i need to find exactly the right materials for the gimmick. I would very much appreciate it if someone could find me a magnet no larger than a 5p piece and ideally quite a bit smaller. It would also have to be very powerful. I have had a browse but not found anything like it on the market.

I promiss that whoever conjures up the magnet i need will receive my gimmick for FREE before it hits the market.!!

Go to Ebay and do a search for "ndfeb".
You'll find thousands of Neodymiums there.

Thank you very much for that chaps. They are both excellent suggestions, very impressed by the size and strength of these magnets that you are suggesting. The prices are also very reasonable, if all the other materials were to work that well and work well together i could end up being the proud owner of a cool effect.

To the arts and crafts store!!

I think most good magic dealers sell the strong magnets in a variety of sizes, I know my local magic shop does but Malcolm Norton who owns it is a good magic dealer, he is also Secretary of the Plymouth Magic Circle so an excellent performer too! :)

Just a question about magnets... How do you determine their range and power ? are there any standard units ?

The strength of the magnetic field is measured in Tesla. This strength, however, depends on the distance and location of a given magnet.

If you want to specify the "strength" of a magnet itself (from which you can then determine the field strength at a certain distance and a given angle) you need to know its so-called Dipole Moment. This is a single number measured in units of Ampere square-metres.

There are some articles on Wikipedia on these subjects (although they are admittedly a little technical):

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tesla_(unit)

How's effect going? Maybe I'm just nosey but I love to see advancement in magic and I love gimmicks, I know sleight of hand is real magic but the effects of some really good gimmicks are just too powerful on the lay to resist. Can you at least give us some idea of the effect, obviously don't tell us anything if you think you might be giving the secret away.

Nah its not been going to well that one, i cant really make some of the neccessary bits. But i have found a few other simple uses for the magnets that i bought on ebay so all is not lost.

I have another idea for an effect that i am working on at the minute. Its not really magic as if you show anyone the effect then the secret would be lost. I came up with the idea after my dad broke into my room and went through my box of tricks to learn coin unique!!! I was very annoyed but fortunately he still couldnt get it. Since then i wanted a way to improve the security on my box and came up with quite a cool way.

Its a tin case and i lost the keys so cant lock it. What i want to do is switch the outer hinge onto the side with the handle and clips with locks, this new hinge would then go on the inside of the box. The old hinge would then need to be replaced or modified so that the pin in the hinge could be unscrewed. the box would then open from the other way to that expected and the hinge rod would also need to be taken out, i'd also love to see my dad trying to open it!

Just a quick question on this design, am i right in thinking that it is possible to get hinges for the inside of boxes? And also does anyone know of anything like this already?
