Second hand shops are a treasure trove for strange oddities that can make supurb magic props. I've been hoarding all maner of things from charity shops for a while, I've got no idea what I'm going to do with half of the stuff I've picked up.

2nd Hand shops

Postby Allen Tipton » May 24th, '10, 22:30

Last year in one of our 5 charity shops in the local town there was:
Mark Wilson's original hard back Course in Magic for £1

They also had a large magic set, with a super mirror glass for £1:50p. Bought it.

Last week my friend bought a great magic set from the Salvation Army shop for £2--including a metal set of C & B's.

Some years back in York I bought Professor Hoffman's book, 'King Koko' for 5p--yes five pence. Later in Davenport's 2nd hand Book catalogue I found it was worth £56. Fascinating book in which PH gives you a complete children's story/act. Then he explains all the tricks used in it.The name inside the cover is J.C Frisby March 1916.

Was it the special super-rare edition containing the definitive Berglas ACAAN appendix, by any chance?

ACAAN?

Never heard of it....

Only ever found a small book written by a young 'magician' who is currently hosting a gameshow (name escapes me) aimed at children.

Its been on the shelf of the charity shop for ages...but i always search just in case.

When we were in Australia last November, we visited a second-hand bookshop. Picked up a pile of bargains. The shop had a copy of one of Professor Hoffman's works... but unfortunately they knew exactly what it was and had priced it well beyond my pocket.

I got to look at it, anyway, and drool a bit.

When my wife and I visit antique shops she looks for china and I spend the whole time rooting through the piles of rubbish books in the hope that I will one day strike gold. Sadly so far only found unread copies of the Da Vinci code.....

I found "The Secrets of my Magic" by Devant, another by Hercat, a couple of books on houdini, and several others. Being only a child I didn't know what I had until much later in life. ... I have quite a treasure trove! I also found a beautiful old magic drawer and a very battered set of 3 brass cups and a few grotty crochet balls - but not sure what thats for. lol
