Tabary or Fiber Optics

Postby david_pickup » Sep 19th, '10, 00:37

I'm really interested in adding a rope routine to my walkaround act and am seeking advice on what teaching material to buy. I think I've narrowed my decision down to either the Tabary DVD or Fiber Optics DVD, but after watching both routines and reading the reviews I can't make up my mind.

What are other peoples opinions on what's best?

I have both and eventually you'll want to buy them both too. However, to start with I recommend that you buy Fiber Optics as it is by far the easier to learn of the two.

You get far more material to learn on the Tabary 2 DVD set but a lot of it is not really that practical to use in a close up situation whereas you can use most, if not all of the Sander's routine. Also, most of the Tabery sleights are in the left hand whereas Sanders is in the more natural right hand.

Finally, Tabary's French accent is far more difficult to understand as opposed to Sander's Canadian accent.

Another couple of DVD' to consider are Flip's Rope Magic and Jahn Gallos Ring and Rope.

It's not really an optical illusion - it just looks like one!

I really like the work of Tarbary,
I learnt it from his book, by the way.

It's not as well known as Fibre Optics, which everyone seems to be doing, so that is something to consider.

The Tarbary act also doesn't have the professor's nightmare plot in it either.

Final thing to check out is Daryl's Encyclopedia of Rope Magic - three discs of quality material on there.

Do you perform Tabary as walkaround or stage?

Stage and stand-up magic, i.e. 50 - 100 people.

I don't really do ropes walkaround.
I usually have them, and maybe if they've seen me before and then someone asks - but they never do.
