Hi New To Magic Talk Boards

Postby Magic_S » Dec 6th, '10, 19:41

Hi All,

My names Steve, I'm 26, 27 next month thinking I'm maybe too old for magic but would like to learn it.

First was got into in magic when I was about 5, just with a Paul Daniels magic set. not really done magic since I was about 12 though.

This year my girlfriend bought me tickets for us to see Derren Brown and then Penn & Teller both were amazing and because of seeig them I have bought a few tricks and books and would really like to start learning some good close up/street magic.

So if anyone has any tips or anything that would be great.

Sorry for going on a bit but thought this looks to be a great forum and a good place where i can get involved.

Thanks
Steve :D

Hi Steve,

Welcome to T/M. 27 is definitely not too old to get into magic, there are plenty of magicians out there that were/are much older than you when they started out.

You will get all the tips you need on here, but why not get in touch with Brian Phillips at The Ilford magic Society,im sure you will be more than welcome down there.

Good luck, and let us all know how you get on.

Hiya, welcome to TM! I'm 27 so I really hope it's not too old :D

A great place to get you started is Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic, a lovely book with a massive range of different types of magic all brilliantly explained.

Hi, Welcome to TM

You're not too old to start magic,

my general advice first off would be,
remember it's all about the performance, rather than the mechanics,
practice this well and think about how the effect will come across when you perform it,
please at least try to be a little original,

As mentioned, the forums have lots more useful things for more specific questions.

Definitely not too old.
"This time around" (I dabbled in bar magic in my late teens and very early 20s) I started at almost 29.

You said "street magic"... do you mean the David Blaine type "street magic" ambushes or the more traditional "street magic" a.k.a. busking? I'm a big lover of the latter and have been working on a cups and balls routine on and off (mainly off) since I got a set late last year.

Oh, and "welcome". :D

Hi All,

Thanks for the warm welcome and replys.

It's good to know that I'm not to old to be learning magic.

The type of street magic I am interested in in the style of Paul Zenon, Pete Hathway and David Blaine (not his standing in a block of ice etc... though). I'd like to be able to go over to random people in the street and perform some great tricks for them, I'll need to practice, practice, practice and do a great performance.

I have a few tricks, including "bitten coin" "WOW" and finger impaller which I think is a great little effect but need more practice with.

I also want to learn card tricks and how to handle cards well.

Deano - thanks for letting me know about the Ilford Magic society, will def look into that!

Thanks
Steve :)

Hi steve,

Just to let you know that Paul gordon is lecturing at Ilford Magical society on 19th Jan 2011.
I would sugest you get down there,Ive seen him lecture on quite a few occasions over the years.
Have a look at his website. He is one of the best card magicians in the UK.
Dont forget to take plenty of money with you so that you can purchase some of his Books/Dvds etc.
He will also do some fantastic deals for multi purchases.
