Beginner Courses - Davenports Vs International Magic...

Postby Clarky » Jan 6th, '11, 15:47

Hi All,

Am new here and really like the forum, my query is, I am going to have a go at a magic course (am just looking to learn so can entertain pals in the pub) and Im torn between two in london:

Davenports (the strand) & international magic (clerkenwell), both offer good beginner courses and seem simular but international magic is quite a bit more expensive, but offers more ongoing support in terms of angles and they give you a DVD so you dont forget what you have learnt.

Im wondering if anyone has done these courses and if they can offer any advice, im not looking to earn any cash long term from this just have a bit of fun and im pants at learning from books!

Cheers for any advice!

Clarky.

I have never done a magic course, but I have dealt with both shops in the past. I have found International Magic to be the top shop in terms of customer service and support, and just plain knowledge. So my leaning would be that way. There may be a good reason why they charge more.

Having said that, Davenports also have a good reputation, and I am sure that if you went with their course you will not be disappointed.

How much is the IM course? I didn't see a price.

You do have another option to ask in your local magic shop if they do lessons. I suspect you'd be looking at around £30 per hour, but you'd get a focus.

I would also plump for IM - never had a bad experience in there!

(and Jerry sold me my first trick in there too - so maybe I'm biased!)

I know the difference between tempting and choosing my fate

Who is doing the actual teaching in both cases? I would imagine that to be the most important question.

The International one is usually taught my Marco and sometimes David Jones, I believe.

A book, The Royal Road to Card Magic and 6 packs of cards.
Courses can be good and I know someone who has done one of those and it was a good all round introduction. But, depends if you want to learn a couple of tricks or learn lots of card tricks, some coins, some sponge balls, some rope , etc . etc

Awesome feedback guys thanks alot, im definatley leaning towards IM, plus a buddy is doing the course, price wise IM is £360, where as Davenports is £135, but if you work out the price for the actual hours that are involved, they are both the same but IM has more hours on the course and DVD support etc. Also its weekly so that it gives you the incentive to practice inbetween.
