Chicago opener

Postby russellmagic » Jan 3rd, '11, 22:46

Am I the only one thinkingn that this is a great closer for a card set? I don't like to use it as an opener as I just feel the first effect should be quick and set a scene without the use of a spectator. I would like to know what you all feel makes a great opener or closer. Thanks.

start off with something fast but amazing then go onto more time consuming tricks then do a long trick with a big finish for closing

ok, if on the streets then would do a quick visual coin quick. Because i feel if I pull out the cards then people run off! "oh, another street magican". If i open with a spectator then i do something like producing the 4 aces then go into daleys last trick. Been doing that the last year actually so i guess i do open using specs!

I have used this in the middle of a set before. I have a different presentation that involves flash paper (which the specs seem to like).

I do this version when the setting is right. I did it at a wedding last year to a great response, carrying a few different 'stranger cards' with me so I could perform it at different tables.

Next time we meet up, mate, I'll show you this presentation.

So are you saying an effect that is easy is not a good opener or closer. Personally I find some of the effects that seem easy create a great result.

Did the camera man turn up late? Where is the beginning?

Not showing that they came from the red backed deck and not showing the back of the cards removed from that deck, makes the ending pointless.

For an opener, I'd go for something fast moving with around 3 good varied hits, the last being strongest and unexpected. Yeah, it's formulaic but it works.

RANDOM ASIDE
While writing this, I was just struck by a random idea for my next routine. The idea is a normal card routine but plagued by an Ambitious card through every trick. I joke at the start about how a certain card is always falling on the floor (as it falls out the deck) or getting in the way, then as the routine goes on it keeps turning up at awkward moments. This is probably an age old idea but I can already see it taking shape in my head. :)

I was reading something a month ago that mentioned that you COULD do the ACR with Dark Card.

It 'is' a great closer!
I also like to utilize a 'slightly' different version in my ACR routine.

Lee Smith's Icebreaker is a great opener. Its very quick and visual and has lots of spectator involvement. It doesnt matter whether the effect is easy or not its what it looks like to the spectator. e.g. ID is visual and clean to the spectator but looks magical.

Lee's Ice Breaker is fantastic as an opener, and I always use a slightly different version.

However if I'm out with my cards and someone says show me a trick, I pretty much ALWAYS do chicago opener, it's that powerful with a good presentation. Great for a time when you don't necessarily need to 'open', just do something!
