It's nice...... But I am going to say the same thing here that i say to everybody who does this, and its this...

The exagerated moves and the poses in this routine, were all part of Slydini. Everybody who does this, and includes those moves, are copying him. And most of th etime, these moves look un natural, and false.
The oposite of what Slydini intended. He was all for natural movements.

Now that said, you didnt do as many.. but you still did.

and I.M.H.O. of Slydinis routines, the balls in the box has to be the most Illogical, and non magical of them all. as it is easy to deconstruct.

oh, and try using sponge balls, and a hat in this routine. Instead of balls, and a box... :)

you're like Yoda.you dont say much, but what you do say is worth listening to....

I agree with Dale on this, in that the exagerated motions are a bit too.... well, exagerated. Rather than seeing this as Tonys routine, try to think of it as YOUR routine. How would YOU do it, what are the poses and gestures that are natural to YOU.
I understand these exagerated movements act as misdirection, but try to think more subtly. Ask yourself questions, ''do I have to do a certain thing a certain way'', ''why did Tony do things in those particular ways'', ''is there a better way for ME to do a certain thing''. Remember, gestures and poses that are natural for one performer are rarely natural for someone else.
Having said all that, I quite enjoyed the performance :), its a nice routine. Thanks for posting.

hey guys,

well i must say that get a comment from you two is good anough for me, this forum got the best classic magician, and i mostly agree with your comments, i really tried to get comftable with the music and doing the vanishes in a diffrent pace, but i will think about this issue again.

how many other vanishes you think can fit to this routine?

I wouldnt necesseraly change the vanishes. What I would change though is the method. In this effect I think using the o*e ah**d principle (pm me if your unsure what that means) would work well, and could make it more deceptive. It would also get rid of the last load, which in my opinion is a weak point in the routine.

I don't agree with one word that anyone has said here. Anyone that knows me will tell you that I am a cynical type and don't like virtually anyone's work, including the alleged great names in magic. However, you do a beautiful job of it and you should stick to doing it in exactly the same way you are doing it now. Keep all the gestures and do them exactly as they are. You are doing a beautiful artistic job. Be very careful of criticism from magicians including me. If you listen to everyone you can end up in an even worse state. Remember that laymen haven't the slightest idea who Slydini is so it doesn't matter if your actions are "unnatural". And they aren't unnatural in the contect of what you are doing. They are artistic, not unnatural.

One thing does bother me though and it is a technical thing. I don't want to expose anything since this place comes up on search engines. I do believe the retrieval action with your left hand has to be worked on because I think it looks a trifle suspicious. Compare it to the clips of Slydini working and you will see what I mean.

But I congratulate you on doing a wonderful job. I enjoyed it very much.

Oh, and don't lick your fingers when you pick up the first napkin. It destroys the arty-farty illusion and makes it look like you come from Yorkshire rather than somewhere terribly Continental.

I shall let you into a little secret about that trick. Ken Brooke told me that Slydini himself didn't think much of it but he included it in his book because he thought it would teach people his system of timing and misdirection.

I have been watching again and the action of your left arm is bugging me. I think you need to study Slydini's book again or watch the video of him doing this. Your arm is moving about too much. It seems to move to the left and down into your lap instead of straight down without the detour.

Apart from that I don't have much to complain about which I can assure you is a rarity for me.

Mark, Ive had a think about what you wrote in your first post, and also rewatched the video. You are right. In the context of the performance, and with the music thats playing, the movements do fit. Perhaps I was a bit hasty with my first reply.
I still think the alternative method I mentioned would make it more deceptive though :)

I still stand by what i said about the effect in general.Mainly because....

If Slydini himself didnt think much of the effect... its ok for me to not like it .

about this..

Postby artofmagic » Feb 9th, '11, 00:11

well,

thanks you all for your thoughts and comments i think this is a very basic routine that works realy well on laymen.. i think that any who will try this routine on stage will find out that this routine is one of those routines that establish you as a preformer, i consider my self as a young preformer (doing magic for 2 years now..) and most of the magician start today in close up and cards tricks and always doing flourish and pattern, and to do this transformation to stage shows is so hard becuase illusions are so expansive and good lines and jokes are rare and it take time to collect them, so doing routines like this with music and a to tell a story with your body is so simple and useful. and for a reason i didnt get to talk with anyone that is preforming this, i see a lot of paper balls over the head but this routine is almost gone..

i dont really care what slydini thought on this routine , i thank him for his routines and ideas .but the important thing for me is that i got a good expeirance with this routine and the crowd loved it so far, and i recomand on this routine to any ine who is looking the bridge from close up to stage, i dont think you wont be disappointed and the reactions will get you get going to bulid your own magic.
