View posts since last visit - browser issue?

Postby MagicIain » Mar 4th, '11, 10:43

Hi all - I'm having problems with the 'View posts since last visit' button. It keeps saying there are no new posts. When I know there are. I find them. Slowly. With my eyes straining between my own diary entries and the datestamps on posts. Meticulously making my way through the forums like Sherlock Holmes.

Is it a browser issue? It's happened on Firefox and Chrome on my laptop, and on Safari on my phone.

Strangely, when I made my intro post last week, it did work properly.

I'd like to make a joke about cookies here, but as I don't understand them, that'd probably take the biscuit.

As far as I know there are no problems with he TM servers which would cause this but it usually happens when the inital log on is lost and log on has to be redone. Sometimes you get a few second's grace and can log back in without losing the post history but not very often! As has been mentioned elsewhere, sometimes log in problems can be overcome (note I didn't say 'cured'!) by clearing your cookies and then logging in.

However, I have to admit that most of my log in problems can be traced quite firmly to an over abundance of Tesco's cheap plonk....

I've noticed this too - every time now I have to log in twice, and that clears the new posts lists. Not sure if it's my machine or TM though.

I never even noticed that feature. However I just clicked on it and it worked for me. Using IE

It's a software issue, been like that for as far as I remember. I believe it might be a bug in the software itself

If you want my boring technical guess at the problem, I think it stores session data inside a database to store last seen timestamps, and the cookie life isn't too high, and using more than one tab confuses the software because back when it was written tabs weren't very common.

See, I told you it was boring

There isn't much of a fix except don't log out, only visit in the one tab/window, and only use one computer to log in. Doing the opposite to any of these generally clear your recent visited posts.

For some reason Safari for iPhone behaves weirdly where Safari for iPad doesn't

And posts will generally be marked as read after a few minutes from you navigating away from the site/not going from page to page

Just done it to me again tonight. It's so strange as when I logged in for the first time in months and months last week, I had 1098 unread posts!

Makes it difficult to keep up with everything.
